HONOR MagicBook: A Potent Combination of Performance, All Day Battery Life, and Attractive Price

HONOR is a very well-known name in our market, thanks to its long list of quality phones that the brand has released in Malaysia over the past few years. In 2020, HONOR will be expanding its product portfolio in our market through the upcoming release of its first ever laptop for Malaysia, the HONOR MagicBook.
Now, you might be wondering: why is a smartphone brand making a laptop? Truth to be told, this is just one part of the HONOR’s effort in providing an all-around intelligent and connected experience for consumers through what the brand called as the Intelligent Lifestyle IoT Strategy.
It is actually a reference to the brand’s 1+8+N integrated ecosystem that covers one smartphone, eight types of connected products, and infinite number of third-party devices. For HONOR MagicBook, it represents the PC category which is one of eight product types that were defined in the strategy.
Now that we already know the main reason behind the genesis of the new HONOR MagicBook, it is time to learn what the newest light and slim laptop in our market has to offer to the consumers in Malaysia.

ALL DAY BATTERY LIFE

Being in a hyper-connected world, there are times when we might be outside the boundary of our office and home. During such situation, this would rule out access to power socket but with the HONOR MagicBook, you don’t have to worry though.
Equipped with a 57.4WHr battery, the HONOR MagicBook is said to able to last up to 10 hours of continuous usages. Specifically, it can churn through productivity tasks for 10 hours as well as 9.5 hours when it comes to locally stored full HD video playback or 9.4 hours of web browsing.
We’ve tested* that claim by letting the HONOR MagicBook continuously stream contents at Full HD from Netflix. Streaming via Wi-Fi utilizes additional power compared to local playback but nevertheless, the HONOR MagicBook that we tested last for 9 hours 25 minutes which is just few minutes shorter than the figures provided by HONOR.
*Battery test settings: power profile is set to Best Battery Life with Battery Saver turned off. // Connected to Wi-Fi 2.4Ghz // Brightness level: 50%. // Audio via headphone output, volume set at 30%.

FAST USB-C CHARGING

But what if your task is taking quite long to the extent that your HONOR MagicBook runs out of juice? Fret not, it doesn’t require that long to fill up the battery on HONOR MagicBook once again.
According to the company, HONOR MagicBook requires 30 minutes to gain back around 40% of its capacity. This is made possible by the laptop’s ability to support fast charger with power ratings of up to 65W.
By the way, as you might have guessed it, the HONOR MagicBook does come standard with a 65W charger. Since it is also a USB Type-C charger, you can also use it to charge your smartphone which means that you don’t have to carry two different chargers in your bag.

LIGHT AND SLIM DESIGN

Speaking about being on the go, not matter you need to do whether doing a presentation in a meeting, working on that proposal inside your Grab ride on the way to your appointment or simply watching movies at a cafe while waiting for your friend, the new HONOR MagicBook will not weight you down.
This is thanks to its lightweight nature as the HONOR MagicBook weights at only 1.45 kg. Not only that, the laptop also has a thickness of around 15.8 mm which made it easy to be carried around and of course, the premium design on HONOR MagicBook is being enhanced further by the laptop’s all-metal chassis and polished finish

ALL-AROUND POWERHOUSE

Now, let’s talk about performance. Since the HONOR MagicBook is not designed just for a singular role, it needed a brain that can cover three main use cases of a PC: productivity, gaming, and entertainment.
That comes in the form of the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor which also carries the AMD Radeon RX Vega 8 graphics.  At the same time, the HONOR MagicBook is also equipped with 8GB DDR4 dual-channel memory and a fast PCIe-based solid state drive with a whopping 512GB storage space.
For those who are wondering, the hardware within the HONOR MagicBook should provide enough firepower for HD-level gaming on popular e-sports titles. One such example is Dota 2 which we managed to obtain average framerate of above 30 fps on Full HD resolution during our test**.

Other than that, we’ve also put the HONOR MagicBook through the built-in benchmark inside a shooter game, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege at similar resolution. The game is more graphically demanding than Dota 2 but the HONOR MagicBook still managed to put out playable framerate.
We have also achieved similar result with Rocket League*** which is an interesting e-sports title that merges vehicular action and football. All in all, HONOR MagicBook can certainly functions as a capable companion regardless for work or play.
**Dota 2 test match: The International 2019 Grand Final – OG vs Team Liquid: Game 1, time stamp: 15:00 – 20:00. // Benchmark software: FRAPS.
***Rocket League test settings: Local Exhibition Match, 5v5, Pro Bot Difficulty, 5 minutes, Soccar, Tokyo Underpass // Anti-Aliasing is set to FXAA Low in all tests. // Benchmark software: FRAPS.
#All game tests were done on Best Performance power profile.

CONVENIENCE AND SECURITY

HONOR also didn’t forget the importance of security which is why the HONOR MagicBook is equipped with a fingerprint sensor that fully supports Windows Hello technology. Integrated directly into its power button, it takes less than a second to unlock the HONOR MagicBook via its fingerprint reader.
Being an HONOR product, it is rather natural for HONOR MagicBook to support HONOR Magic-Link 2.0 which allows easy cross-collaboration between the laptop and HONOR smartphones.
This feature supports drag-and-drop file sharing and even allow users to control their HONOR smartphones directly from the HONOR MagicBook – all with just a simple tap to initiate the cross-collaboration.
All the features we mentioned above – all-day battery, lightweight and sleek design, fast USB-C charging, all-around performance, security and convenience – are just a small glimpse of what the new HONOR MagicBook has to offer to all mobile warriors out there.
More importantly though, the new HONOR MagicBook also comes with a rather attractive price tag of RM 2,299. To sweeten the deal, HONOR is also providing freebies to go with its first ever laptop in Malaysia.
If you purchase the new HONOR MagicBook from senQ and Senheng, you will receive an HONOR Band 5 Sport for free. If you prefer to get it from Shopee or HONOR Malaysia’s official website you will then be entitled for a free HONOR Band 5i starting from 9 and 15 April respectively.
Regardless of your online store choice, there is also additional freebies in the form of an HONOR Bluetooth Wireless Mouse and HONOR Backpack. Don’t wait too long though as the first batch of HONOR MagicBook apparently sold out in just 2 minutes at HONOR Malaysia’s website and Shopee while senQ and Senheng first stock was gone in 15 minutes.
To learn more, you can have a closer look at the HONOR MagicBook by visiting hihonor.com/my or check it out directly at the nearest HONOR Store once the Movement Control Order is over.

Samsung Could Have An 600MP ISOCELL Imaging Sensor In The Works

Samsung’s Galaxy S20 Series was the first time the Korean electronics giant introduced its 108MP ISOCELL Bright HM1 imaging sensor to the world. Not wanting to fall into complacency, the brand is now reportedly working towards a goal of making a 600MP imaging sensor a reality.

Samsung explains that its endeavour into making such an imaging sensor as a challenge “that motivates their innovation”. More specifically, it says that it’s trying to create a lens that matches the perceived resolution of our eyes.
Technically speaking, Samsung says that our eyes are said to match a resolution of around 500MP. Meaning that many of today’s imaging sensors on both smartphones and digital cameras don’t quite match the level of quality our own eyes are able to perceive.
At that resolution, Samsung also says that the 600MP imaging sensor could theoretically detect light wavelengths that go beyond the human senses. If you’re wondering what the perceived wavelength for human eyes are, it’s between 450 and 750 nanometres (nm).
Unsurprisingly, Samsung has been stingy with the details surrounding the 600MP imaging sensor, but we understand. To date, 108MP is the highest resolution we’ve seen a smartphone utilise, but that took several years to develop and as it stands, it still requires some tweaking. Further, it’s unlikely that we’ll be seeing such an imaging sensor making its way into consumer anytime soon. At least, not for the next several years.

Apple Adds Battery Health Management To MacOS Catalina 10.15.5

Apple added a feature into MacOS Catalina to change the way it deals with the long term battery health of MacBooks. It’s simply called battery health management, and will be available in MacOS Catalina 10.15.5.

Apple explains that the feature works by monitoring the change in a battery’s heat level history and charging patterns. Based on this, it may reduce a battery’s maximum charge based on your usage of a MacBook. This gives the MacBook’s battery a longer overall lifespan, at the cost of a slightly shorter battery life per charge.
If you don’t like the way it works, Apple says you’ll be able to turn the battery health management off. You will be able to do this from the Battery Health section of Energy Saver, under System Preferences. The feature is turned on by default.
While the battery health management means that your MacBook will need to be charged more frequently, it still means you’ll be able to delay when you need to get its battery replaced. And this can be good, simply because the battery of a MacBook is not user replaceable.
MacOS Catalina is currently in its second developer beta build. Apple has yet to release details of a public beta version.

A Man Built His Own Nintendo Switch From Scratch For Just US$199

The Nintendo Switch is currently experiencing a shortage around the world and whatever units that are available are being sold online by unscrupulous price gougers at a price far greater than the console’s actual value. One man clearly wasn’t having any of it and decided that he would build one from scratch.

Brennen Johnston, a DIY enthusiast based in the US, set out on his ambitious project to make a Switch console for his friends. And also because he wouldn’t stop gushing about the new Animal Crossing New Horizons title that launched for the console.
Sadly, the average cost of a Switch in the US at current hovers between US$300 and US$400 (between RM1311 and RM1748), which is quite steep. Although, in the country’s defence, Malaysians had to pay upwards of RM2000 for the console at launch.
In effect, Johnston began scouring the internet for all the essential parts through online retailers such as Craigslist and eBay. Clearly, it worked out for him, as he had managed to purchase the 22 components necessary. Yes, that also includes a fully functioning Nintendo Switch logic board. All in all, the process of building a Switch from scratch took Johnston approximately one month, but more importantly, it all costed him US$199 (~RM869).
As a gesture of goodwill, Johnston also posted instructions and the list of parts needed on his Imgur page for those who fancy themselves a DIY master or just won’t pay those absurd asking prices for the console.

MCMC: Home Broadband Installation During MCO Is Only For Customers In Green Zone

The Senior Minister (Security Cluster), Ismail Sabri Yaakob recently has revealed that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and telcos are allowed to perform Internet installations at customers home once again. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has since provided additional explanation regarding this matter.

According to the regulator, installations work inside customer’s home for fixed broadband can only be performed at locations that are within green zone. This also applies to restoration, network maintenance, and new infrastructure installations.

For areas that have been designated as yellow and red zones, ISPs and telcos are only allowed to perform work outside customer’s home. For troubleshooting, their scope has also been limited up to the Distribution Point only.
MCMC stated that this decision was taken because on-premises installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures usually required at least two personnel. Even when they visit locations that have been deemed as green zone, ISP and telco staff are required to show their declaration of heath to customers before performing any work over there.
Additionally, they also need to wear face mask and practice social distancing throughout their duration at customer’s home. As a temporary measure, MCMC has recommended customers within yellow and red zones to consider wireless broadband service instead which can be activated without having ISP or telco staff coming to their home.

Here Are 9 Tips From Celcom On How To Ease Up Data Bandwidth During MCO

Are you on mobile data, but can’t seem to get most out of its speed lately? Don’t worry, you’re not the only one experiencing this at this current time. Especially with the Movement Control Order (MCO) in effect.
No matter how high you hold your phone or point at whichever direction, it’s quite unlikely that you’ll recover the fast speed that you’re accustomed to prior to this. Before you ask, it’s not your phone or mobile device that’s having an issue – it’s because there are more people accessing the data connection than usual due to the current situation.
Regardless of whether using it to stream videos in high definition or to play games online with a group of friends, data traffic will inevitably clog up. Moreover, slowdowns will occur almost oftenly with so many people online at the same time and using data for such purposes.
However, it is possible for users to free up bandwidth in order to lessen data traffic for a smoother experience. Here are some useful tips from Celcom on several ways we can reduce data usage, so that the nation can enjoy uninterrupted fast mobile data connectivity during these trying times.

Moderate Your Data Usage Manually

Without a doubt, most of us will have our mobile data switched on by default, even when we’re not entirely using it. Self moderation sounds like a tedious habit to pick up, but it actually helps ease network congestion.
You can achieve by simply disabling your data connection you head to sleep or take naps, and when you’re out driving to buy your daily essentials. Most would argue that they may receive private messages during these times but chances are, you’re likely to check on them when you wake up or when you arrive at your destination. Plus, messaging while driving is hazardous!
Alternatively, those who have home internet connection should obviously opt for WiFi connectivity instead.

Give Your Mobile Hotspot A Break

Sure enough, some users agree that Hotspots are convenient to use and find that it could sometimes provide faster internet speeds compared to WiFi. However, this approach also consumes incredible amounts of data – roughly 3 to 4 gigabytes a day, even when just surfing the web.
With the MCO recently extended, you’ll definitely want to use your data sparingly as not to exhaust your data quota. So be sure to only use your hotspot if necessarily required, or when your WiFi connection isn’t working.

Disable or Limit Data Usage of Certain Apps

Not many people know that some apps will continue to use data to download or upload in the background, even when you’re not using them. Fortunately, there is a way to either limit this or stop it entirely.
Simply access Settings on your device and navigate to the Mobile Data/Data Usage section. From there, you’ll be able to disable or limit data usage for certain applications. For iPhone users, you can enable Background App Refresh (General > Settings) to further aid in reducing data usage. This limits your phone to only update when it is connected to WiFi.

App Housekeeping

Sometimes, we tend to forget that we may have downloaded a variety of apps which we may not be using after some time. Taking a cue from famed organising consultant Marie Kondo, do these apps spark joy in your life?
If not, it’s due time for you to remove and clean up your phone from excessive apps that you no longer use. This would also free up a lot of space, RAM usage, as well as data consumption. As we’ve pointed out before, some apps still use data even when you’re not using them.

Download to Watch Or Listen Later

We can’t deny that streaming content is definitely convenient, as all you need to do is just click the play button and let Netflix or Spotify handle the rest. But in times such as these where data traffic is heavily congested, you’re likely to experience a reduction in quality in video or audio.
The best alternative to this is by legally downloading the content instead. Thankfully, services such as Netflix and Spotify Premium allows users to download media to be consumed at a later time. One way is to have a reasonable number of videos or music download while you attend to your work or daily activities, thus giving you something to look forward to afterwards.
Remember not to be greedy by binging and keep the bandwidth clear while you enjoy your downloaded content!

Auto-Play or Downloads Will Burn Through Your Quota

On top of downloading updates in the background, some apps (like social media) also have the tendency to automatically play videos whenever you browse content. Handy as it may sound, but it actually deducts data from your quota as well.
The best course of action is to go to each app’s Settings menu and disable any instances that allows it to automatically download updates or autoplay media. Apart from apps like Instagram, Facebook or Youtube, remember to set your Google Play Store or Apple App Store to only auto-update apps only when you’re connected to WiFi.

Compress Your Data To Save Up to 50% of Usage

By now, most of us are aware that media such as music and videos are data intensive, which hogs up plenty of data when transferring or downloading them. Fortunately, using a data compression feature on your phone could actually save up to 50% in data consumption.
You don’t have to worry about losing quality of videos or pictures if you have this feature activated. Data compression will intelligently compress your files without any noticeable compromise in quality and can provide a faster web browsing experience too.

Tips For Home Broadband

In interest of conserving the bandwidth of mobile data during MCO, your household will be relying ever more on your home broadband’s WiFi connection.
Make sure that your router is positioned in the best spot in your home in order for members of your house to constantly stay connected. It’s also advisable to reset your modem and routers after long hours to refresh the internet connection, but remember to inform everyone in your house first!
Also remember to apply the previously mentioned pointers to your home internet connection as well. Lessen home network congestion by having everyone moderate their own internet usage and give each other a fair share of the bandwidth.

Cable Over WiFi

There’s no denying that WiFi is indeed convenient. However, for a fast, stable and consistent internet connection, it’s recommended to rely on ethernet cables instead. This is especially if your household is equipped to support connection by cable, of course.
Having a mix of WiFi and cable users can also free up the latter’s bandwidth, thus allowing for a clearer and faster connection at home.
By conserving as much data and bandwidth as possible, we are doing ourselves and our beloved nation a big favour by reducing congestion. Celcom pledges to keep Malaysians connected so that they’ll be able to stay updated with the current situation and seek assistance when required. For more internet passes, be sure to subscribe via the Celcom Life app on Android and iOS devices, or by dialing +188#.

We #StayIn As One

Celcom believes that a small difference can make a huge impact. With the #StayIn campaign, the company is encouraging all Malaysians to continue staying indoors during the MCO period. We’ve braved a month of social distancing, and together we can take on another two weeks.
You can also support this movement by changing your profile picture/video on Facebook and Instagram with the #StayIn logo, available via this link.
#StayIn, stay safe, and lets curb COVID-19 together.
