Facebook Now Allows You To Transfer Your Posts To Other Platforms

Facebook today revealed that it has rolled out a new feature which would allow its users to preserve their published posts to platforms outside of its ecosystem such as Google Docs, WordPress or Blogger. This greatly expands the existing data transfer tool for photos and videos that was introduced by the social media company last year.

The new feature is part of a cross-company data-sharing initiative that launched in 2018, simply known as the Data Transfer Project. Its aim is to have users freely move their data across various online services and platforms seamlessly without restriction. Among those participating in this initiative includes Apple, Google, Microsoft and Twitter – all of which also have introduced their own data-export tools.

Concurrently, as noted by The Verge, the introduction of this new feature would also help bring Facebook in line with two recent regulation laws, the California’s Consumer Privacy Act and the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation. “We hope this tool empowers people to take control of their data and encourages the creation of updated rules around data portability by lawmakers,” said company Chief Privacy Officer Michel Protti. “We look forward to working with more experts and companies to expand the scope of what you can move between platforms.”

This new addition to Facebook’s information transfer tool is now available to all users across the globe. Those who wish to utilise the feature may find it in the “Your Facebook Information” page, under the platform’s Settings page. From there, you can choose which type of content you wish to transfer, and to which platform outside of Facebook that you want it delivered to.

Keep in mind that the choices of transfer destinations will differ depending on what type of content you wish to move. Also, it’s worth noting that any data ported to other platforms will not include elements such as comments or data from other users, as they belong to their respective owners.

Hyundai Showcases A Fully Modernised Version Of Its 1975 Pony Hatchback

Hyundai has recently unveiled the Heritage Series Pony, a reconstruction of its 1975 hatchback which now features a variety of modern tech such as camera-based mirrors, touch controls, and more. It’s also worth noting that the original car, which celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2020, is the car maker‘s first ever mass-produced and exported vehicle – a historic first for South Korea as well.

The reimagined Pony mostly retains the original model’s design, which was conceived by legendary automobile designer Giorgetto Giugiaro – who also designed several iconic cars such as the 1967 Maserati Ghibli and 1981 DMC DeLorean. Newly introduced to the car’s exterior are the aforementioned fender-mounted camera-based mirrors, as well as pixelated front, rear and signal lights – similar to those featured on Hyundai’s IONIQ 5. Needless to say, this variant of the vehicle would look pretty much at home in any 70/80s sci-fi movie.

The interior of the car is where things get funkier. Its dashboard features a striking instrument panel which uses Nixie tubes to display information such as battery percentage and top speed, while its steering wheel features voice activation capabilities. Other than that, it also comes with a digital touch transmission, cradle space for mobile phones, and modern lighting system on its doors. Meanwhile, stored within a stainless steel case in its rear boot space is Hyundai’s last-mile mobility device (basically, a fancier name for an electric scooter).

The other noticeable difference on the Heritage Series Pony is the lack of a rear exhaust pipe, therefore confirming it to be an all-electric vehicle. However, Hyundai did not detail any information regarding the car’s onboard powertrain or its expected performance.
But that’s to be expected of a showcase vehicle.

Yes, you read that right. This variant of the 1975 car is actually just a semi-functional concept that is placed on display as part of the company’s “Reflections in Motion” exhibition. And it’s not for sale either, so those who are considering acquiring this retro-futuristic vehicle certainly have their hopes dashed.

The Heritage Series Pony is currently being exhibited at the recently opened Hyundai Motorstudio in Busan, South Korea from 8 April to 27 June.

G.Skill Introduces Trident Z Royal Elite DDR4 RAM Series

G.Skill has launched its new Trident Z Royal Elite series of DDR4 RAM, the latest addition to the brand’s Trident Z family. The new memory draws inspiration from the current Royal series and basically flaunts a new heatsink design and better-looking heatsinks.

Aesthetically speaking, the aluminium heatsink on each memory stick now features what G.Skill refers to as a “meticulously sculpted” crystalline pattern, which basically gives it a more textured look and feel, versus its predecessor’s plain outlook. On a related note, the new memory sticks still retain the same crystalline light bar on its spine, complete with an eight-zone RGB lighting that can be configured as customised via the onboard PC system it is installed into.

Then, as now, the Trident Z Royal Elite series comes in two colour palates, Gold and Silver. Moreover, the DDR4 memory kits are available in sets of dual 8GB, 16GB, and 32 GB options, and at speeds of 3600MHz, 4000MHz, 4266MHz, 4800MHz, 5066MHz, and 5333MHz. As always, CL timing for each memory kit varies, but they start at 16-19-19-39 for 3600MHz kits, while the fastest 5333MHz kit has CL timings of 22-32-32-52.

Availability-wise, G.Skill’s new Trident Z Royal Elite Series DDR4 RAM will be available globally from May onwards.

Android 12 May Let Users Access Hidden Recycle Bin

With Android 11 having launched last year, it’s probably safe to expect Android 12 getting announced sometime this year. And one of the features the new mobile OS may feature is a recycle bin that users can access. XDA has found code referencing this in a developer build of the OS.

Android 11 has a version of the recycle bin built in already. That being said, it’s not something that users can freely access, like on a Windows PC. Instead, certain apps have the ability to restore certain types of files in the bin if they have the right permissions. One example is the Google Files app.

This could change with Android 12, where access to the recycle bin becomes system-wide. The recycle bin will possibly be placed under Settings > Storage. Though this will only allow you to empty the recycle bin. Restoring individual files will still require the Google Files app.

It’s a nice feature to have, especially if you frequently delete and restore files on PC. This will give the Android 12 experience a sense of parity, so to speak. That being said, as is the case with features found in unreleased versions of Android, this user-accessible recycle bin may not actually make it to the release version.

Ant Group Denies Exploring Jack Ma’s Exit After Explosive Report

Ant Group strongly denied that the company ever considered the option of having founder Jack Ma sell his stake in the company to help end ongoing scrutiny from the Chinese government. The fintech giant was responding to an explosive Reuters report which cited anonymous sources alleging that the option was indeed being considered.

Sources told Reuters that officials from China’s central bank (People’s Bank of China) and financial regulator China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission met separately with Ma and Ant between January and March, where the possibility of the billionaire’s exit was raised.

One Reuters source said the company hoped Ma’s stake could be sold to existing investors in Ant or sister company Alibaba. But another source claimed that the billionaire was told, during his talks with regulators, that he wouldn’t be allowed to sell his shares to any entity or persons close to him – though the door was open for him to transfer his stake to a Chinese investor affiliated with the state.

Reuters said it couldn’t tell if Ant and Ma would ultimately proceed with a stock divestment option – or which one. Not long after the article was published, Ant tweeted that the story was “untrue” and “baseless”, adding that, “Divestment of Mr. Ma’s stake in Ant Group has never been the subject of discussion with anyone.”

Ma’s companies have been in government crosshairs ever since he criticised China’s regulatory system last October. Chinese authorities scuttled Ant’s high-profile IPO in November and initiated an anti-monopoly probe against Alibaba in December, which recently culminated in a CNY 18.23 billion (~RM11.5 billion) fine.

REvil Ransomware Now Able To Change Windows Passwords And Automate File Encryption In Safe Mode

The REvil Ransomware recently received an update that effectively allows malicious hackers to change Windows passwords, as well as automate a system’s file encryption via Safe Mode directly after that.

According to Bleeping Computer, the update was reportedly added in an effort to help these actors evade detection and to shut off backup software and database servers when encrypting the target’s files. Breaking down the update further, the new REvil ransomware reportedly changes the user’s password to “DTrump4ever” when the -smode argument is used.

As dastardly as this ransomware is, the silver lining in all this is that the affected person would still need to manually log in to Windows Safe Mode before the encryption can occur, and that alone could tip off the victim to the ransomware’s actions.

Of course, it should surprise no one that this isn’t the first time REvil has been cast into the spotlight. Last month, the hacker collective claimed responsibility for attacking the Taiwanese tech brand, Acer, and holding their servers hostage to the tune of US$50 million (~RM206 million).

In addition to the attack, the group also warned victims that it would not think twice about launching DDoS attacks on them or email their business partners about their activities. Should they choose not to pay the ransom.

Facebook Announces Clubhouse Clone Live Audio Rooms, Set To Launch Mid-Year

Facebook announced a new feature called Live Audio Rooms that mimics much of what popular audio-based app Clubhouse does. It is expected to launch by summer – that’s mid-2021 for the rest of us who don’t live in the Northern Hemisphere.

Rumours have swirled around the development of Facebook’s Clubhouse clone. Facebook has already been beta testing Hotline, a Q&A-based app that’s quite similar to Clubhouse, but Live Audio Rooms seems to be a separate feature that’s fully integrated within the existing Facebook ecosystem.

Before launch, Facebook said it intends to test Live Audio Rooms in Groups, making it available globally for Group users and their communities. Public figures will also have access to the feature, allowing them to host conversations with other public figures, experts, and fans.

Live Audio Rooms will also be available on Messenger at launch – which comports with rumours last month that the social media giant was working to build a broadcasting feature into Messenger. Unlike Clubhouse though, content creators have the options of turning a live conversation into a podcast for later listening, and sharing audio excerpts from a session in the form of Soundbites (also a new feature). In contrast, Clubhouse’s philosophy emphasises privacy and the app generally doesn’t allow recordings – an attribute that made it initially popular in China before it was banned there.

Facebook is taking a different route probably based on commercial considerations – it wants to make things easier for creators, attracting a large pool of them. While unveiling Live Audio Rooms, the social media giant also pointed to creator monetisation opportunities through its Star feature, and announced an upcoming ability to charge access to a Live Audio Room through a single purchase or a subscription.

Earlier this month, Clubhouse itself announced its first monetisation feature called “Payments”, which enables direct payments to creators.

Disney To Shut Down Majority of Its TV Channels In Southeast Asia: May Deeply Impact Astro and unifi TV

Disney will be shutting down the majority of its TV channels in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong later this year. The decision was reportedly revealed to its staff during a town hall session this morning.

According to the report by ContentAsia, the reason behind the move was apparently due to a shift of focus to the direct-to-consumer business model in the form of streaming service. As you may know, the company has begun to offer Disney+ in Singapore and Indonesia while there were already major signs that service will be offered in Malaysia soon.

ContentAsia has also listed the 18 channels that will be closed by Disney:

Disney channels: Disney Channel, Disney Junior

Fox channels: Fox, Fox Crime, Fox Life, FX, Fox Movies, Fox Action Movies, Fox Family Movies, Fox Sports, Fox Sports 2, Fox Sports 3

National Geographics channels: Nat Geo People

Star channels: Star Movies China, SCM Legend, Star Sports 1, Star Sports 2

Others: Channel V

The closure of these channels will apparently take place on 1 October 2021 and only four channels will continue to be operational including National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo Wild, Star Chinese Channel, and Star Chinese Movies. The report also noted that the town hall session today did not discuss the impact of this decision on existing Disney’s staff within SEA and Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, this decision will definitely have a massive impact on Astro and unifi TV if this report proved to be true with the exception of Disney Channel and Disney Junior which have already been pulled out from Astro earlier this year. From the list above, many of them are currently available on both pay-TV platforms especially those that are under the Fox banner.

Not only that, the three Fox Sports channels carry plenty of major sporting events such as Formula 1, Australian Open, U.S Open, and many more. As live sports have always been seen as a major crowd puller for pay-TV services in Malaysia, this would not bode well for both Astro and unifi TV.

For now, even Disney’s broadcasting partners seem to be caught by surprise though. When we reached out to Astro to obtain clarifications, this was their response:

With reference to the news report that Disney plans to stop 18 of its linear channels in the Southeast Asia region of Oct 2021, we wish to inform that we are still waiting for detailed information from Disney.

We will update customers once we have full details.

As Disney and TM have not yet released any official statement on this matter, we are now reaching out to them to seek further information. We will keep you posted once we hear more.

Tesla sold bitcoin for $101m profit

Tesla reported first-quarter results on Monday, including a record quarterly net profit of $438 million on a GAAP basis.

As usual, those profits were buoyed by sales of environmental regulatory credits. But in a new wrinkle this quarter, the company’s sales of bitcoin during the quarter also contributed $101 million toward the bottom line.

In February, Tesla made waves when it announced a $1.5 billion purchase of bitcoin and said it may continue investing in cryptocurrency more broadly.

On Monday, Tesla’s shareholder update revealed that sales of bitcoin made a $101 million “positive impact” to the company’s profitability during the period ending March 31, 2021.

On the company’s cash flows statement for Q1 (page 26), it recorded $1.5 billion in purchases of “digital assets,” as well as $272 million in proceeds from sales of digital assets during the quarter.

Elsewhere (page 5), the company says its profitability was helped from a sale of bitcoin which contributed a $101 million “positive impact, net of impairments, in ‘Restructuring and Other.’” This shows up as a $101 million reduction in operating expenses on the company’s Statement of Operations (page 24).

This suggests that the company quickly flipped some of its big bitcoin purchase for a gain of $101 million, as bitcoin prices rose during the quarter.

As CFO Zachary Kirkhorn said during the earnings call, “Elon and I were looking or a place to store cash” that wasn’t immediately being used to get returns. But they had a need to be able to access their cash quickly too.

“Bitcoin has proved to be a good decision. A good place to put some of our cash that’s not being used for daily operations…and be able to get some return on that.” Kirkhorn added that while they were pleased with the liquidity of the bitcoin market, “It is our intent to hold long-term.”

Tesla does accept bitcoin payments from customers now.

But apart from that, it’s not clear how investments in and use of cryptocurrency serve the mission of Elon Musk’s electric vehicle and energy storage business. The stated mission of Tesla has long been to “accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”

Vicki Bryan, founder of the bond investment research firm Bond Angle, wrote in an e-mail to CNBC:

“Bitcoin is not fungible or logically advantageous as currency, arguably not safer for the owner vs cash in transactions, and inexcusably damaging to the environment.”

Tesla had historically racked up around $1.6 billion in regulatory energy credits, primarily zero emission vehicle credits, Bryan notes. Credit sales helped Tesla to report more than four consecutive quarters of profitability, qualifying Tesla for addition to the S&P 500 index.

With Tesla’s bitcoin purchases, Bryan says, Tesla is adding a volatile asset with limited reported visibility to financial statements which “already conceal vital clarity of key operations and financial conditions.”

Malaysian named top in the world for chemistry

Cheryl Chow Shu Wei, a 17-year-old from Beaconhouse Sri Inai International School, Petaling Jaya has once again placed Malaysia on the global academic map after being named ‘Top in the World’ for Chemistry.

Cheryl beat out nearly 1 million other students from around the world to earn the prestigious award from the Cambridge Assessment International Education during the recent Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards. Wen Jiabao's eulogy to his late mother censored

Chinese Internet firms blocked users from sharing a lengthy article written by former Premier Wen Jiabao in tribute to his late mother, censoring a senior member of the ruling Communist Party, possibly because he spoke out of line.
The obituary-style article written by Wen about his mother, who died recently, appeared in a small weekly newspaper called the Macau Herald on Friday (Apr 16) and was posted on a public account on Chinese chat app WeChat on Saturday, but was swiftly restricted.
The heartfelt tribute includes details of Wen's mother's struggle during periods of upheaval in China, including the second Sino-Japanese War and the political purges of the Cultural Revolution.
"In my mind, China should be a country full of fairness and justice, always with a respect for the will of the people, humanity, and human nature," said Wen's article, which did not directly discuss China's current political environment.
China's ruling Communist Party (CCP) has sought to tighten control over how netizens discuss history on the country's heavily controlled Internet in the run-up to the 100th anniversary of the party's founding, in July.
Under President Xi Jinping, the space for dissent in China has narrowed, while censorship has expanded.
Wu Qiang, an independent political analyst in Beijing, said the article represented an "alternative voice from within the party" that is out of step with efforts of the last few years to stifle dissent.
"The power of this article by Wen is that it challenges that, and this is the main reason why it has been banned from being shared," he said, noting the party's sensitivity around its anniversary.
Last week, an arm of China's cyber regulator launched a hotline for netizens to report "illegal" comments that "distorted" the Party's historical achievements and attacked the country's leadership.
When users tried to share Wen's article, a notice appeared saying that the content went against WeChat's regulations and could not be shared, a common censorship measure in China that is one step below purging articles completely.
On Weibo, the Chinese social media site similar to Twitter, there was scant mention of the article, and comments and sharing functions had been disabled. Links to articles on Wen's tribute posted on Weibo returned "404" messages on Tuesday morning, indicating they had been deleted.
The operators of WeChat and Weibo, as well as China's Internet regulator, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Former Chinese leaders and high-profile politicians rarely cultivate public personas or share detailed biographical information in their retirement, and are expected to slip gracefully from the limelight.
Since assuming power in 2012, Xi's signature policies have been cemented in the party constitution and term limits abolished, putting him almost on par with Communist China's founder Mao Zedong in the pantheon of its leaders.
Wen, who was premier under former Chinese leader Hu Jintao, was a leading figure behind the country's economic policies in the 2000s, and left office in 2013 when he was succeeded by current Premier Li Keqiang.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Lite Design And Specifications Leaks

New renders and details featuring the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Lite have recently surfaced online, thanks to leakster Evan Blass (@evleaks). This corroborates an earlier leak by fellow industry insider WalkingCat (@_h0x0d_) back in late February, which featured details and the expected release window of the tablet via an alleged product roadmap from the South Korean tech giant.

According to Blass’ leak, the Lite features a large 12.4-inch LCD display with dual front-facing cameras housed on its right bezel (top, if viewed in landscape orientation), therefore making it similar to last year’s Galaxy Tab S7 Plus model in terms of size and appearance. However, the new variant reportedly comes with a WQXGA LTPS TFT screen, rather than a Super AMOLED panel that’s featured on the Plus.

On the back of the Galaxy Tab S7 Lite appears to be an aluminium body with a dual camera setup situated on the top left corner. Just below the shooters is a magnetised port to hold and maybe charge the S-Pen accessory, which is presumably packaged together with the tablet once it launches. Meanwhile, on the top and bottom of the device are grilles for its AKG-tuned speakers, and a USB-C port is also visible below it.

Unfortunately, the leakster did not detail the other hardware specifications of the upcoming tablet. However, according to websites PhoneArena and SamMobile, the device will reportedly feature Android 11 via the brand’s One UI 3.1, a 5G-enabled Snapdragon 750G chipset, and 4GB of RAM. Using last year’s Galaxy Tab S6 Lite as reference, a WiFi-only version of the new tablet is also quite likely.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Lite is expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite. Both of these are expected to debut later this year in June, according to the earlier leak by WalkingCat.

Microsoft Officially Announces Its Malaysian Data Centre Region

Said to be one of the most significant endeavours that Microsoft has embarked on in Malaysia since establishing its operation here in 1992, the company today has unveiled its new Bersama Malaysia initiative. Involving an investment of USD 1 billion (~RM 4.1 billion) over the next 5 years, the initiative will also include the establishment of the first Azure data centre region in Malaysia.

But before we go further, let’s go through the differences between a data centre region and a data centre. According to Microsoft, a data centre is an actual physical building that houses servers and, on another hand, a data centre region is a set of data centres that are linked together through a dedicated low-latency network and latency-defined perimeter.

In other words, a data centre region consists of multiple data centres. Microsoft also stated that the upcoming Malaysian data centre region will also feature Azure Availability Zones which guarantees that customers’ data will be protected regardless of whatever happened to the physical data centre site since the data would be synchronised throughout the Azure data centre region.

Aside from Azure, the Malaysian data centre region also provides access to other cloud services from the company including Microsoft 365 as well as Dynamics 365 and Power Platform. Located in the Greater Kuala Lumpur area, the data centre region will be the third Azure data centre region in Southeast Asia after Singapore and Indonesia.

According to a research by IDC that was commissioned by Microsoft, the company’s investment in Malaysia may generate up to USD 4.6 billion (~RM 18.9 billion) in new revenues within the next four years for local partners and cloud customers. The research also estimated that more than 19,000 new direct and indirect jobs could be established through this endeavour.

However, Microsoft didn’t reveal when exactly the new Malaysian data centre region will be operational. Similarly Malaysian has not yet been added to the data centre region list on Azure’s official website at the time this article was published.

[UPDATE – 20 April / 10:00 AM]: Azure’s official website has since been updated to include Malaysia:

Frankly speaking, this announcement is a long time coming. Then again, Microsoft was one of the four Cloud Service Providers that have been recently given conditional approval by the government to build hyperscale data centres in Malaysia as part of the MyDIGITAL initiative and Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint.

So, it was just a matter of time before the company finally made this official.

Pepsi Organises Month-Long AR Concert In Malaysia

Pepsi Malaysia has announced the launch of what it claims to be the first augmented reality (AR) concert in Malaysia. This is in conjunction with the launch of the new Pepsi Black Raspberry flavoured drink. And as such, the AR concert is only accessible with a bottle of the drink.

To view the concert, you’ll first need to get a bottle of the Pepsi Black Raspberry, as mentioned. Then, you’ll need to head over to a microsite dedicated to the concert on a mobile device. It’s worth noting that if you access the site via a PC, you’ll be asked to do so via mobile anyway. From there, use your device to scan the logo on the Pepsi Black Raspberry bottle as if it were a QR code.

Considering the AR application, you’ll need the bottle constantly in the background to watch the concert. You have the option to zoom in or out to enlarge or minimise the view, but otherwise the concert plays over the bottle.

The AR concert officially started back in 16 April, but Pepsi Malaysia says that it will be ongoing for a month. It features Siti Nordiana as its main star. Also appearing are self-taught dancer Bell, freestyle footballer Aidil, and another singer Syafeek.

Amazon Cancels Lord Of The Rings MMO

Amazon has many video game ambitions, some working out better than others. But it has one that’s supposed to be a Lord of the Rings MMO. It’s probably the most ambitious of them all, but it’s also the most recently cancelled of them all.

Bloomberg reports that Amazon Game Studios was working on the online LotR title with Hong Kong-based Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd. This is also the company that owns Warframe developer Digital Extremes. The game was first announced back in 2019.

While the game was in development, Chinese tech giant Tencent stepped into the picture by acquiring Leyou in December 2020. This then led to a dispute between Amazon and Tencent. Ultimately, both companies could not come to an agreement, and the LotR MMO was cancelled as a result. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the cancellation and the circumstances that led to it.

Amazon is having a rough time entering the gaming market. Between this and the cancellation of Crucible, the company now only has its other MMO, New World, left in development. It currently has a 31 August release date, having been delayed from the initial May 2020 window. Beyond that, it has another ongoing venture into gaming via the Luna streaming service.

You Can Now Check Your Vaccination Appointment Status Directly On JKJAV’s Website

As previously announced by the authorities, Phase 2 of the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme (NCIP) will kick off tomorrow, 19 April 2021. With the aim to immunise 9.4 million people, this particular phase is focusing on senior citizens, people with disabilities, and those that have chronic diseases.

Since earlier this month, the national contact tracing app, MySejahtera has begun notifying users of the details for their vaccination appointment which include the date, time, and location of the Vaccine Administration Centre (VAC). In case you have forgotten your appointment date, you can always return to the app to check them out.

Alternatively, you could use this online tool that the Special Committee On COVID-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV’s) has recently implemented on its website. All you need to do is just input your MyKad or passport ID as well as phone number and once you solve the captcha, you are then able to check out the details of your vaccination session:

As pointed out earlier, you don’t have much to be worried about if you are using MySejahtera as information in the status check should ultimately match what has been stated inside the app. What’s more important is that you get yourself registered for the vaccine and keep a look out for MySejahtera’s notification or SMS in which you then have 48 hours to accept your vaccination session:

If you are not a MySejahtera user, you can also register for the vaccine manually via JKJAV’s official website or call the NCIP’s hotline at 1800-888-828. The NCIP has been scheduled to take place until February 2022 but nevertheless, we do recommend registering yourself for the vaccine as soon as possible.
