Google Kills Its AR Measure App Three Years After Project Tango

Google retired Project Tango in 2018 to make way for ARCore. Now, the AR app known as Measure will also be joining the Google Graveyard. For those whom have never downloaded it, it will never be found again. But for those who did download it at least once before, it “is no longer supported and will not be updated”.

Android Police noted the the app is no longer listed in the Google Play Store for accounts that did not previously download it. But for those that did, it should still work normally. And at the time of writing, the internet search giant still has Measure listed in its AR & VR experiences site. Chances are this will be removed soon.

For those who don’t know, Measure was one of the most compelling uses of AR back in the day. We’re talking about when the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro was first announced back in 2016, as the first phone that supported Project Tango. That being said, it’s safe to say that the idea was better than the implementation, as the app wasn’t exactly accurate. So while it was fun, to say that it was practical was probably  stretch.

AR tech on mobile phones are these days more used for location based games instead. You have the likes of Pokemon Go, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, and even one for The Witcher. And they are all battery hogs, much like Measure was back in the day.

Razer Launches Hammerhead True Wireless X Earbuds; Retails At RM349

Gaming firm Razer has recently launched the new Hammerhead True Wireless X, which is now available for purchase via its official website, RazerStore, and authorised retailers. The earbuds is yet another variant of the original Hammerhead TWS that was released in 2019, which was then followed with the release of the Pro model late last year.

This latest iteration falls nicely in between the two variants in terms of hardware, while also sporting some notable improvements over its predecessors. It’s design is also reminiscent to the 2019 model, ditching the Pro model’s AirPods-like look. Each Hammerhead True Wireless X earbud is equipped with a custom-tuned 13mm driver, and an LED illuminated touch panel for managing calls, music playback and so on.

Unlike the Pro variant however, the new Razer TWS lacks active noise cancelling (ANC) capabilities. Not necessarily a deal-breaker, and its exclusion may also have contributed to the earbuds’ noteworthy price. More on that later.

A familiar feature found on the Hammerhead True Wireless X is the series’ Gaming Mode, which lowers down its Bluetooth latency to 60ms when activated. Speaking of which, the earbuds are equipped with Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity and also comes with Google Fast Pair support for Android smartphones. Razer noted that it is possible to pair the new Hammerhead to video game consoles, but you’re required to purchase an optional Bluetooth adapter for that.

In terms of battery, the gaming firm claims that the earbuds can last up to 24 hours in total, including after topping up from the accompanying charging case. Using the Hammerhead while having its LED lighting disabled, on the other hand, will let it run for several hours longer – approximately 28 hours, according to Razer.

The Hammerhead True Wireless X retails at RM349, which makes it the most affordable variant among its TWS siblings. To recap, the original and Pro models launched at RM479 and RM949 respectively. Whether its audio performance is on par with its predecessors or otherwise remains to be seen… or rather, heard.

Battlefield 2042 Is Now Official; Releases On 22 October

Electronic Arts has finally revealed Battlefield 2042 as it promised to. But the game is bad news for fans of the series who would like to see singleplayer content. As during the reveal, the publisher said it will be a multiplayer only game.

But for those who like large-scale PvP games, Battlefield 2042 may be one of the biggest out there once it gets released. It will feature maps big enough to hold 128 players in a match. And to keep things from being too monotonous after a while, the maps will also feature dynamic weather and other environmental hazards.

Battlefield 2042 will have three main game modes. The first is called All-Out Warfare, which is a fancier name for the older Conquest and Breakthrough, but on a much larger scale. Hazard Zone is the second, which is likely where the environmental hazards come into play. EA has not revealed what exactly the third one is, opting to only reveal it on 22 July.

As for the game’s release, Battlefield 2042 will be out on 22 October 2021. Pre-orders are already open, and those who do so will get access to an open beta. Buy any of the non-standard editions, and you’ll be able to play the game a week early, on 15 October instead.

Facebook Smartwatch May Release Next Year; To Feature Two Cameras

Earlier in February, we saw reports that say Facebook may be working on a smartwatch of its own. New reports provide more details on what this wearable may entail, as well as when it may be released. And it’s not anytime soon, to be sure.

The Verge reports that the smartwatch by Facebook will come with a detachable display. This display will also come with two cameras . Detaching the module will then let users take pictures and videos, Naturally, you’ll be able to upload them to the company’s many platforms, including Instagram. It may also come with LTE connectivity for this purpose, so that it can work without a phone.

One camera will sit in front, the way a front-facing camera on a phone will. This one exists mostly for video calls, which probably means a lower resolution. Another sits at the back of the module, allowing for 1080p recording with auto-focus. Facebook will also be working with other companies to make accessories to allow the module to be attached to things like backpacks. Which makes it sound like an action cam.

The report also states that this is the social media company’s plan to circumvent Apple and Google, going straight to users. Which also goes to explain why, despite it being a smartwatch, the detachable module behaves quite like a dumbed down smartphone.

Facebook is also reportedly already working on second and third generations of the device. Which sounds like the company is confident of its success. But the first generation will not be seeing the light of day until some time in summer 2022.

Huawei MatePad Pro Available In Malaysia On 18 June; Price Starts From RM3999

Huawei has officially launched the 2021 edition of the MatePad Pro in Malaysia, which is slated to be available for sale next week on 18 June. As noted in our previous report, the new tablet is also one of the first devices from the brand to feature its new HarmonyOS platform.

Just in case you missed it, the MatePad Pro features a 12.6-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 and an aspect ratio of 16:10. Huawei claims that the tablet’s screen has a colour accuracy rating of  ∆E < 0.5, which makes it ideal to function as a secondary monitor for professionals such as designers or photographers. Besides that, the display also features the brand’s ClariVu Display Enhancement technology and Eye Comfort Mode for optimum viewing experience. Audio-wise, the new MatePad Pro features eight Harman Kardon-tuned speakers, and four onboard microphones.

Under its hood is Huawei’s own Kirin 9000E 5G flagship chipset, which is accompanied by 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of UFS3.1 storage. Users are also able to expand the tablet’s storage up to an additional 256GB by slotting in a proprietary Nano (NM) Card, if they so wish. In terms of battery performance, the 2021 MatePad Pro comes with 10,050 mAh capacity which features wired and wireless fast charging support at 40W and 27W respectively. It also has the ability to reverse charge other compatible devices via wired at 5W and wireless at 10W.

On the back of the tablet is a dual camera setup consisting of a 13MP main sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide, and a 3D TOF (time of flight) sensor for improved autofocusing. Meanwhile, housed in front on the side bezel is an 8MP camera for selfies and video calls.

Other than that, the new MatePad Pro comes with the upgraded Huawei Share feature via HarmonyOS. This enables for seamless multi-screen collaboration capabilities and data transfer with other compatible devices. Further aiding with the user’s productivity on the tablet is the support for the brand’s 2nd generation M-Pencil accessory, which now boasts a low latency of 11.2ms and features 4,096 points of sensitivity. The first party stylus can be attached magnetically on the side of the Pro for both storage and wireless charging, and is also compatible with older MatePad models.

Also introduced during the launch is the new Huawei Smart Magnetic Keyboard, which can be magnetically attached to the 2021 MatePad Pro. Much like the M-Pencil above, attaching the keyboard will also charge its internal battery.

The new Huawei MatePad Pro will retail starting from RM3,999 once it arrives on store shelves next week. In the meantime, pre-orders for the tablet are now available for interested customers starting today until 17 June via the brand’s official web storeExperience Store, as well as its Lazada and Shopee stores.

Samsung Announces ISOCELL JN1 Sensor; Reducing Pixel Sizes Even Further

Following the GN2 sensor announced in February, Samsung has now announced the new ISOCELL JN1 image sensor. As with its prior sensors, this one is for the smartphone camera. And it may result in smaller camera bumps in newer phones.

With the new ISOCELL JN1, Samsung has reduced the size of a single pixel down to 0.64 micrometres. Smaller pixels may, as mentioned, mean smaller camera modules on phones. That, or it will allow for other camera modules like telephoto or ultrawide cameras without making the camera bump bigger. This versatility will allow these supplementary cameras to have the same high resolution as the main camera.

But you might think that smaller pixels would reduce image quality, especially where brightness and exposure is concerned. And you’d be right. But Samsung says that this is compensated by the ISOCELL 2.0 tech itself, which enhances light sensitivity. Of course, the new ISOCELL JN1 will also make use of pixel binning tech, which Samsung calls Tetrapixel, which merges four pixels to work as one.

Samsung says that the ISOCELL JN1 is the first of an upcoming new lineup of 0.64 micrometre sensors. It’s also already in mass production. So you can see phones using one as soon as in the second half of the year.

Alleged M1X MacBook Pro Confirmed In YouTube Tags; Reportedly Scrapped Before WWDC 2021

Prolific leakster Jon Prosser seems to have managed to unearth some information pertaining to an alleged “M1X” processor. First unearthed by Max Balzer, the YouTuber discovered that Apple’s own video of its keynote contained the tags “m1x MacBook Pro” and “m1x”.

While the tags went largely unnoticed, they clearly suggest that Apple had intended on announcing a new MacBook and M1 successor during the keynote, but decided to scrap it at the 11th hour. Having said that, the tags do corroborate rumours of an enhanced “X” variant of the M1 SoC instead of moving on to the M2.

As a quick primer, it was previously reported that Apple has redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros in its pipelines and that they would launch “as early as this summer.” The report suggested the return of the SD card slot, HDMI port, and the trip-friendly MagSafe charging connector. Rumoured improvements include twice as many high-performance CPU and GPU cores and support for up to 64GB of RAM.

Of course, it is also possible that Apple may have simply just added the tags as a means to boost its WWDC 2021 keynote, which is fair, albeit a little misleading.

China Arrests Over 1100 Suspects Linked To Cryptocurrency-Related Money Laundering

Chinese authorities have nabbed more than 1,100 suspects for using cryptocurrencies to launder money illegally gained from telephone and Internet scams, China’s Ministry of Public Security said, according to Reuters.

The arrests seem to be a continuation of Beijing’s broader crackdown on cryptocurrency, which last month saw banks and payment firms banned from offering crypto-related services. China already bans cryptocurrency exchanges and initial coin offerings (ICO), but is testing its own central bank-backed digital currency.

The ministry announced the police had busted over 170 criminal groups which used cryptocurrencies for money laundering. It also said the launderers charged their criminal clients a commission of 1.5% to 5% to convert ill-begotten funds into digital currencies via cryptocurrency exchanges.

China’s Payment and Clearing Association described cryptocurrencies as an increasingly “important channel for cross-border money laundering” due to their anonymous, convenient and global nature, Reuters said.

Despite the strides made by cryptocurrencies at gaining public acceptance in the recent years, they seem to be hitting a rough patch right now. In addition to China’s intensifying hostility to cryptocurrency, Elon Musk’s Tesla reversed its decision to accept bitcoin as payment for cars.

One bright spot is that El Salvador has now adopted bitcoin as legal tender, perhaps encouraging others to follow suit.

Sony Reveals Airpeak S1 Professional Drone With US$9000 Pricetag

Sony officially pulled the curtains back from the Airpeak S1, the Japanese electronics firm’s first professional drone. Initially announced during CES 2021 earlier this year, the Japanese brand divulged little detail about its drone, up until today.

According to its official product page, the Airpeak S1 is designed to work with Sony’s own lineup of mirrorless cameras, such as the A7S Mark III and Alpha 1. Specs-wise, the drone has a maximum speed of 90km/h, a maximum angular velocity of 180° per second, and an attitude angle of up to 55°. Additionally, Sony says that the Airpeak S1 can remain stable in winds of up to 72km/h.

As for flight time, Sony says the Airpeak S1 can fly for 12 minutes straight with a camera attached, which is a little on the low side, especially when you consider the air time of most drones on the market. However, without a camera attached to it, Sony says that its drone will fly for 22 minutes on a single charge. On top of that, the Airpeak S1 can go from zero to 90km/h in 3.5 seconds.

There are some caveats to using the Airpeak S1, unsurprisingly. Firstly, the drone does support a special Gremsy T3 gimbal that helps to connect the external camera to it, but sadly, it is a separate purchase. Further, you will need to ensure that you have a sufficient number of batteries for the camera, as the drone does not provide additional power to it.

Lastly, the Airpeak S1 is also bundled with a controller, as well as a dedicated app called Airpeak Flight. Funnily enough, the app is only available on Apple’s iOS and iPadOS, meaning that you’ll only be able to fly the drone using an iPad or iPhone. Sony says that this limited availability is only temporary and that the app will be available for Android – hopefully, its Xperia lineup of devices will be first in line – but did not specify when.

As for availability and pricing, Sony says that the Airpeak S1 will be available sometime during Q3 this year and will cost an eye watering US$9000 (~RM37093). For that price, you also get two pairs of propellers, controller, two batteries for the drone, along with their charger.

Intel-Powered Macs Reportedly Will Not Be Getting Live Text And Other Monterey Features

If you watched Apple’s WWDC 2021 keynote, you’ll know that the fruit company’s newly announced macOS Monterey comes with a ton of new and exciting features. Sadly, it seems that not all of the OS’ new features will be available for its Intel-based Mac machines, as some features will be exclusive to Macs running on the new M1 Apple Silicon chip.

If you’re running an Intel-powered Mac and don’t plan on upgrading anytime soon, here are some of the features that you’ll be missing out on:

  • FaceTime Portrait Mode
  • Live Text, which lets you interact with text in photos (e.g. being able to copy and paste an address on a sign)
  • Interactive globe in Maps
  • Detailed new city experience in Maps
  • Neural text-to-speech voice in more languages for Siri, including in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish
  • On-device keyboard dictation without a time limit (dictation was previously limited to 60 seconds)

As a quick recap, M1-powered Macs officially hit the market back in November last year. However, when the company from Cupertino announced its transition to its own silicon chips last June, they said that it would “continue to support and release new versions of macOS for Intel-based Macs for years to come.”

Obviously, this bit of news runs contrary to the company’s initial promise, so little wonder that some Mac users have taken to social media, accusing Apple of planned obsolescence.

Seagate Has A Limited Edition Cyberpunk 2077 SSD

Cyberpunk 2077 launched over half a year ago. The game has also weathered most of the bad press it got due to its messy launch. But the idea of “better late than never” was probably what went through the minds of the people at Seagate. The company has unveiled its limited edition SSD themed around the CD Projekt game.

Beyond the bright neon yellow skin, what Seagate has unveiled is a FireCuda 520 SSD in an M.2 2280 form factor. With it comes all the other benefits of an SSD of this type, like read and write speeds of 5000MB/s and 4400MB/s respectively.

TechSpot reports that Seagate is naturally only making 2077 of the limited edition Cyberpunk 2077 SSD. And it only comes in 1TB storage capacity. The standard editions of the FireCuda 520 SSDs come in 500GB and 2TB variants as well.

Last month, OnePlus also announced its Watch with the CyberPunk 2077 theme in its home market of China. While in a sense it’s also considered to be a little late to the party, the phone maker was among the first to cash in on the game’s hype, with the OnePlus 8T phone.

But back to the Seagate SSD. Considering it’s a limited edition, you can expect it to be priced a little higher than the standard FireCuda 520 SSD. Add the recent scalping trend in tech, and it will probably be unobtainable at a reasonable price anyway.

Huawei Looking To Attain Driverless Car Tech By 2025

We now know a bit more about Huawei’s automotive ambitions. Previously known mostly for its smartphones, the Chinese tech giant is planning to attain driverless passenger car technology by 2025.

“Our team’s goal is to reach true driverless passenger cars in 2025,” said Wang Jun, a senior executive at Huawei’s smart vehicle unit, at an industry conference, according to a Reuters report.

Huawei and its smartphone business became a frequent target of US sanctions during the Trump years. The company remains in Washington’s bad books even under the Biden administration. Seeking to adapt, it recently pivoted to automobiles, pouring over US$1 billion (~RM4.1 billion) into researching and developing self-driving and electric car technologies.

It also announced that it would collaborate with three automakers to produce self-driving cars with the Huawei name as a sub-brand. Recently, it was reportedly broadening its partnership with one of the aforementioned automakers, Changan Automobile, to include the design and development of automotive chips.

Huawei’s 2025 target for self-driving tech puts it slightly behind fellow Chinese companies Baidu and Geely, which through their joint venture Jidu Auto, aim to launch an “intelligent” electric vehicle (EV) with autonomous driving technology in about three years (2024).

China’s E-Hailing Giant DiDi Files For IPO; Valuation Could Double That Of Grab

China’s largest e-hailing company, Didi Chuxing, has filed to be publicly listed in the US through an IPO (initial public offering) that could be the biggest this year. Indeed, the firm could end up with a valuation that is more than double that of Grab – the Southeast Asian giant that we’re all more familiar with.

Sources previously told Reuters that the IPO could aim for a valuation close to US$100 billion (~RM410.8 billion). And according to a Bloomberg report in April, the company was looking into a valuation of as much as US$70 billion (~RM287.6 billion) to US$100 billion. That would easily beat Alibaba’s US$25 billion (~RM102.7 billion) IPO in 2014 – the largest achieved by a Chinese company listing in the US.

As a comparison, Grab is going public in a SPAC deal worth US$39.6 billion (RM 163.7 billion) – the largest of its kind on record. For more information on what SPACs and IPOs are, you can refer to this piece. Of course, it’s worth mentioning that Didi has a substantially larger pool of potential customers (China, etc.) than Grab (Southeast Asia).

According to Reuters, Didi CEO Cheng Wei said last year that the company wants to have 800 million monthly active users worldwide and complete 100 million orders a day by 2022 – this includes e-hailing, bike and food delivery orders.

Grab, on the other hand, often touts the total population of Southeast Asia (currently 650 million) as its potential customers. As you can see, the difference is pretty staggering.

Razer Opus X Comes With Brighter Colours And A RM549 Price Tag

Razer first announced the Opus wireless headphones back in May last year. Now, the company is following up with the Razer Opus X. It’s got brighter, punchier colours, but probably more importantly, it has a smaller price tag.

As the name suggests, the Razer Opus X is quite similar to the base model. One notable difference here is the lack of the traditional wired connection via a 3.5mm audio jack. To make up for it, the company says that there’s a 60ms low latency mode that you can turn on. Also making up for the lost feature are a pair of microphones that you can use for voice chats or a good old phone call.

Beyond that, the Opus X sports the familiar 40mm drivers from the base model. It also runs Bluetooth 5.0 for its wireless tech. And it has very marginally shorter battery life with ANC on, rated at 30 hours as opposed to 32. With it off, it has the same 40 hour playback time.

To round it all off, the Razer Opus X comes in Mercury White, Quartz Pink, and its signature Razer Green. And accompanying it is a price tag of RM549. Razer says that its signature colour is only available via its online store.

Elon Musk Claims New RDNA2-Powered Tesla Infotainment System On Par With PlayStation 5

Elon Musk, Bitcoin aficionado and CEO of Tesla, recently held the launch for his company’s latest car, the Model S Plaid. As you’d expect, the electric vehicle is loaded with the latest state-of-the-art technology on the current market, the most important piece of technology for us perhaps being its new and improved infotainment system.

Specifically, the Model S Plaid’s infotainment system is powered by AMD’s Navi 23, a GPU that was initially rumoured to make its debut with the parent company’s alleged Radeon RX 6600 GPU series. To that end, the launch marked the first time the GPU’s power was being demonstrated and during a non-AMD keynote to boot.

Details of Navi 23 is still scarce but from what we know, the GPU is expected to have up to 2048 Stream Processors and support up to 8GB GDDR6 graphic memory on both the RX 6600XT and RX 6600. As for its performance, Musk went as far as to say his car’s infotainment system was as powerful as a Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5).

That wasn’t an empty boast either; putting his money where his mouth is, Musk gave a live demonstration of his car’s Navi 23-powered infotainment system running Cyberpunk 2077 with the console’s 17-inch display as the output and at its maximum resolution of 2200 x 1300 pixels.

Key Specs Of Upcoming Honor 50 Series Leaks

Honor is set to officially debut its latest 50-series smartphones next week on June 16 2021. However, thanks to a recent leak, we may not have to wait long to see what the brand has to offer. As it turns out, there will be three different models to be expected, at least according to 91Mobiles’ latest report.

The first is the entry level Honor 50 SE, which is also – interestingly enough – the largest among its siblings. The phone is said to feature a large 6.78-inch FHD+ LCD display, and under its hood is a MediaTek Dimensity 900 chipset. On its back is a 100MP main camera, paired with an 8MP ultrawide, and a 2MP depth sensor. Due to the lack of images showcasing the SE, it is not known whether the phone will feature the series’ massive dual circular camera bumps on its back. Lastly, 91Mobiles says the phone will pack a 4,000mAh battery with 66W fast charging support.

Next up is the standard Honor 50, which is equipped with a curved 6.57-inch FHD+ OLED display, and a Snapdragon 778G SoC. The rear camera bumps are said to feature a 108MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide, 2MP macro and a 2MP depth sensor, while housed in the punch-hole cutout on its display is a 32MP selfie shooter. Powering the handset is a larger 4,300mAh battery, but features the same 66W fast charging support as the SE variant.

Finally we have the Pro variant of the Honor 50. And if the site’s report is accurate, the phone itself disappointingly isn’t much of a step up in terms of hardware when compared to the standard model. According to 91Mobiles, the Pro features a 6.72-inch FHD+ OLED screen with a pill-shaped cutout housing a 32MP and 12MP front-facing cameras. It is said that it would also sport the same chipset as the standard model, but is equipped with a 4,000mAh battery instead. Despite the battery’s smaller size, the Pro does come with 100W fast charging support – a feature that was previously teased by the brand earlier this week.

Besides that, Honor previously confirmed that the Honor 50 series and its future products will once again feature Google Mobile Services and its supported applications. This is made possible thanks to its recent independence from former parent company Huawei.

Another couple of things you may also have noticed is that some specs were left out in 91Mobiles’ report. These include the memory configurations for all three models, other features, expected pricing and availability, as well as the design of the SE variant. All of which are to be officially revealed during the Honor 50 Series’ launch, so at least we have some things to look forward to next week.

McDonald’s In South Korea And Taiwan Breached By Hackers

McDonald’s has been hit by a data breach in South Korea and Taiwan which compromised some customer and employee information. The world’s largest fast food chain now joins a rapidly growing list of companies worldwide that have fallen victim to hackers.

According to Reuters, the company said that the hackers accessed e-mails, phone numbers, and delivery addresses, but not customer payment information. As one would expect, McDonald’s will be notifying regulators and affected customers.

Information about the breach apparently came from an investigation involving external consultants that was initiated after unauthorised activity was discovered on the company’s network.

“While we were able to close off access quickly after identification, our investigation has determined that a small number of files were accessed, some of which contained personal data,” McDonalds reportedly said in a statement.

Cyberattacks have been increasing at an alarming rate, with their targets and consequences growing exponentially bigger. Last month, a ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline in the US crippled fuel supplies in a large swath of the country for days. Later, hackers using ransomware struck at the world’s largest meat supplier JBS, temporarily paralysing some company operations in Australia, Canada, and the US.

Unsurprisingly, the ability of cybercriminals to attack critical infrastructure and critical industries is a top worry in Washington and other Western capitals right now. Many of these cyberattacks have been linked to Russia or hackers based in Russia – a country that has undoubtedly poor relations with America.

Rainbow Six: Extraction Officially Revealed; Releases On 16 September

Following a couple of name changes, Ubisoft has finally revealed the next Rainbow Six: Extraction. It was previously known by names like the probably-inappropriate Quarantine, and then Parasite.

As part of the official reveal, Ubisoft also released a gameplay trailer that shows what Rainbow Six: Extraction will be about. From the looks of it, it is very easy to draw comparisons with Valve’s Left 4 Dead. One very noticeable similarity is the air-locked room that’s reminiscent of the latter’s safe room. This serves as a checkpoint of sorts, as operators go through three sub zones.

Rather than four characters who do generally the same thing, Rainbow Six: Extraction has up to three operators from Siege in a team. They seem to retain most of their abilities from that title too, for a more strategic approach. Stealth is also an effective strategy, at least at the early moments of each sub zone. Which is nice for players who don’t like to always run in guns blazing.

Since we mentioned operators, there will be a total of 18 to choose from, nine of which has been revealed. Rainbow Six: Extraction releases on 16 September on both console generations and on PC. As the icing on top, it also supports crossplay.
