New Microsoft Patent Hints At Surface Device With Rear Touch Panel

While Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Pro 6 may have launched last month, newly discovered patents of a seemingly new Surface device codenamed “Reflective Display” has appeared online. If the patents are to believed, it’s likely to be a Surface with not just one, but two displays built in.

The patent images were discovered on the USPTO (Unite States Patent and Trademark Office) and first reported by the Windows-centric site, Windows Latest. Technically speaking, all Microsoft surface device are 2-in-1 devices, but what makes this particular device stand is the illustration of a “Metallic Surface Device” that is situated at the rear of the notebook cum tablet.

Microsoft says that the new surface (no pun intended) provides a “reflective multi-layer structure that serves as a supplemental or primary display for an electronic device”. The brand also goes on to say that the additional display “forms an external surface of the electronic device” and that it includes a “light-emitting display” that is separated from the external surface.
Additionally, the new display will also support stylus input, which we presume will be the Surface Pen.
Of course, there’s still nothing conclusive from Microsoft regarding the patent. Also, seeing how 2018 is nearly coming to an end, and with the recent launch of devices. We don’t think the company will be making announcement of a new Surface device with this new feature anytime soon.
