TripAdvisor Included In China’s List Of Banned Apps Under New Cyber Law Campaign

China last month launched a new cyber law campaign to rid digital storefronts of applications that is deemed to spread content related to pornography, prostitution, gambling and violence. According to a report by Reuters, the country has successfully removed 105 software titles through this campaign, including the mobile app for US travel firm TripAdvisor.

In a statement posted on its website, the Cyberspace Administration of China said that the banned apps had violated one or more of three cyber laws. However, it did not provide any specific details for each app.

As it stands, it is undetermined what supposed violations that have caused the US travel firm’s app to be banned by the Chinese administration. Reuters did not receive a response from the Beijing office of TripAdvisor when approached for a comment regarding this matter.

The news agency’s report also noted that the campaign was officialised on 5 November 2020 in response to “strong reaction from the general public” to content deemed offensive. Currently, the Cyberspace Administration said that it would continue to regulate apps and remove those in violation of the law in a timely manner.
