Early marriage in Singapore? (Stories)

Before any of you shitting on me, I have to emphasize that I knew I screwed up big time and already want to box myself in the face. Still a poly student, currently serving internship. I met this one malaysian chinese girl same age as me, but was one of the many workers in the manufacturing side. i was in the IT department, and yes I admit I found her extremely attractive so I became friends with her despite knowing she has a bf ar that time

It started with some teasing, which I got abit overboard and started flirting. Eventually she also caught feelings and broke it off with her boyfriend, which made me felt somewhat distanced as I felt she could do the same to me. (As I'm more good looking, higher education, more financially well-off individually and family wise than her ex)This "office drama" eventually got big and my manager as well as the chairman knew of it. Instead of reprimanding me, they advised me to handle it responsibly and not be so 任性. So I broke the situationship off with her and began to focus fully on my work.

However, due to much stress knowing my mother getting cancer and overwhelming expectations I have for myself, I got increasingly more irritable and anger-prone these months where I did not think nor process many of my actions of what consequences they may have. With my mom getting ovarian cancer stage 4 stressing me out, and the girl in my workplace being there for me, eventually we continued talking and stated we should stay as friends. Or so we thought.

2 weeks ago, she needed help in getting some RFID reader down from the cabinet placed above which I glady helped. We found our eyes locking with each other, and she initiated the first kiss. Afterwards she began to pull me out of the FAB and close to the toilet (a secluded area where our company does not own, shared building), I got carried away and did not think much. Ended up smashing without protection in one of the toilet cabin. I got so guilty afterwards where I repeatedly apologize to her the next few days, which she assured was fine as it was mutual and that it was a mistake on both our part.

Fastforward to today, she told me that she missed her period and took a pregnancy test kit. Turns out she was pregnant. I still have two more weeks towards the end of the internship, and will be graduating in May. I know I have to take responsibility, but I have NS coming up this year as well which I do not know the dates yet, and furthermore I am not sure if I have the financial capability to do so. Despite my family being financially above average, they are worried about my mother's condition and will be furious if they knew about my mistake. My friends all said she babytrapped me, and right now IDK if my savings of 15K will be enough to help us over the tide.

To those who have shotgun marriage or early marriage in SG, please share your experiences and what I should do in this period of time.... Feeling super stressed out. Im not sure of BTO process, ROM, if she's okay without a ceremony etc....

Emotionally wise I'm even more fucked but Idk what to feel at this rate

Edit: Some of the commenters called me to do a paternity test, but I searched up online and it can only be done after about 7 weeks into pregnancy? Which I will do so but as of now I thinking of telling my parents about this first... I don't think my mom will be upset but my dad certainly will be furious-

Edit: I have asked if she really wanted to keep the baby. She does and wants me to be there for her. And I called my mother about this issue, so she will talk to my dad about it. My mom does not seem angry or upset, in fact she sounded more happy about it? And I have talked to the girl in my workplace to not tell anybody about this for now as I'm still on my internship.... Although a lot of my guy friends are advising me to abort the baby while all my female friends (2 of them) whom I told advised me to be there for her. Im in a dilemma

Edit: As I requested to do a test to see if the kid is mine, she agreed to do so when the time comes as she claimed she is a virgin. Also my dad knew what happened... He doesn't seem so angry? He is encouraging us to tie the knot and I'm thinking if I should ask her what she's gonna do on her part...

I also asked if she's okay without a wedding ceremony n she says its fine although she seems rather upset... I feel so fucking guilty but the direction just seems to be heading towards marriage for now and I honestly don't expect myself to be a dad so quickly if the kid is really mine (which most likely it is since she agreed to do the test)

Chinese millenials fed up with materialistic life.

Fed up with work stress, Guo Jianlong quit a newspaper job in Beijing and moved to China’s mountainous southwest to “lie flat”.

Guo joined a small but visible handful of Chinese urban professionals who are rattling the ruling Communist Party by rejecting gruelling careers for a "low-desire life". That is clashing with the party's message of success and consumerism as its celebrates the 100th anniversary of its founding.

Guo, 44, became a freelance writer in Dali, a town in Yunnan province known for its traditional architecture and picturesque scenery. He married a woman he met there.

“Work was OK, but I didn’t like it much,” Guo said. “What is wrong with doing your own thing, not just looking at the money?”

“Lying flat” is a “resistance movement” to a “cycle of horror” from high-pressure Chinese schools to jobs with seemingly endless work hours, novelist Liao Zenghu wrote in Caixin, the country’s most prominent business magazine.

“In today’s society, our every move is monitored and every action criticised,” Liao wrote. “Is there any more rebellious act than to simply 'lie flat'?”

It is not clear how many people have gone so far as to quit their jobs or move out of major cities. Judging by packed rush hour subways in Beijing and Shanghai, most young Chinese slog away at the best jobs they can get.

Still, the ruling party is trying to discourage the trend. Beijing needs skilled professionals to develop technology and other industries. China’s population is getting older and the pool of working-age people has shrunk by about 5 per cent from its 2011 peak.

“Struggle itself is a kind of happiness,” the newspaper Southern Daily, published by the party, said in a commentary. “Choosing to ‘lie flat’ in the face of pressure is not only unjust but also shameful.”

The trend echoes similar ones in Japan and other countries where young people have embraced anti-materialist lifestyles in response to bleak job prospects and bruising competition for shrinking economic rewards.

Official data show China’s economic output per person doubled over the past decade, but many complain the gains went mostly to a handful of tycoons and state-owned companies. Professionals say their incomes are failing to keep up with soaring housing, child care and other costs.

In a sign of the issue’s political sensitivity, four professors who were quoted by the Chinese press talking about “lying flat” declined to discuss it with a foreign reporter.

Another possible sign of official displeasure: T-shirts, mobile phone cases and other “lie flat”-themed products are disappearing from online sales platforms.

Urban employees complain that work hours have swelled to “9 9 6”, or 9am to 9pm, six days a week.

“We generally believe slavery has died away. In fact, it has only adapted to the new economic era,” a woman who writes under the name Xia Bingbao, or Summer Hailstones, said on the Douban social media service.

Some elite graduates in their 20s who should have the best job prospects say they are worn out from the "exam hell" of high school and university. They see no point in making more sacrifices.

“Chasing fame and fortune does not attract me. I am so tired,” said Zhai Xiangyu, a 25-year-old graduate student.

Some professionals are cutting short their careers, which removes their experience from the job pool.

Xu Zhunjiong, a human resources manager in Shanghai, said she is quitting at 45, a decade before the legal minimum retirement age for women, to move with her Croatian-born husband to his homeland.

“I want to retire early. I don’t want to fight any more,” Xu said. “I’m going to other places.”

Thousands vented frustration online after the Communist Party's announcement in May that official birth limits would be eased to allow all couples to have three children instead of two.

The party has enforced birth restrictions since 1980 to restrain population growth but worries China, with economic output per person still below the global average, needs more young workers.

Minutes after the announcement, websites were flooded with complaints that the move did nothing to help parents cope with child care costs, long work hours, cramped housing, job discrimination against mothers and a need to look after elderly parents.

Xia writes that she moved to a valley in Zhejiang province, south of Shanghai, for a “low-desire life” after working in Hong Kong. She said despite a high-status job as an English-language reporter, her rent devoured 60 per cent of her income and she had no money at the end of each month.

She rejects the argument that young people who “lie flat” are giving up economic success when that is already out of reach for many in an economy with a growing gulf between a wealthy elite and the majority.

“When resources are focused more and more on the few people at the head and their relatives, the workforce is cheap and replaceable,” she wrote on Douban. “Is it sensible to entrust your destiny to small handouts from others?”

Xia declined an interview request.

Guo, the writer in Dali, said he puts in more hours as a freelancer than he did at a newspaper. But he is happier, and life is more comfortable: He and his wife eat breakfast on their breezy sixth-floor apartment balcony with a view of trees.

“As long as I can keep writing, I’m very satisfied,” Guo said. “I don’t feel stifled.”

A handful who can afford it withdraw from work almost entirely.

A 27-year-old architect in Beijing said she started saving as a teenager to achieve financial freedom.

“From last September, when I saw all my savings had reached 2 million (yuan) (US$300,000), I lay down,” said the woman, who would give only the name Nana, in an interview over her social media account.

Nana said she turned down a job that paid 20,000 yuan (US$3,000) per month due to the long hours and what she saw as limited opportunities for creativity.

“I want to be free from inflexible rules,” said Nana. “I want to travel and make myself happy.”

Middle Life Crisis ? nobody to talk to (Stories)

I notice when one reach 40 very hard to find new friends
for one thing people got no time to make friend
for second thing people only want to make friend when they know you are successful - probably they can get something out of you
for third thing - all those friends we used to know just evaporate away, either they no time to talk to you - watsapp, email, telephone or because of a past fight not get along.
for fourth thing - so many of my friends migrated. Some wanted me to follow, I resisted, and we argued over this, then never mended. Even my ex girlfriends migrated (both). Gosh.

some years ago, I attended an ex class reunion. I found all my close friends all changed. We used to joke and easy to talk. Nowadays, they all Datuks and Datins. When they see the most successful ones, they all go and suck up, leaving those mediocre peasants like me sitting there.

I do count my lucky stars, that I got my family. I mean, the only person, I talk to a lot is with my wife. But I do long with the occasional guy to guy camaderie. My kid is too young, I just speak gu gu ga ga with my kid. No adult talk.

Then CNY coming. I have many uncles & aunties but they all getting very old in their 80s. I feel sad, I used to grow up with them, seeking them for advise. But ever since they retired, no money to have gatherings. Besides, after my granny passed away, our gatherings became less n less.

Then there are those cousins, we used to play cowboy guns when we were kids. Now grow up, they became like the anti social pencil neck. Some have migrated, while those remain are still single going into their late 30s to early 40s, dunno what they heck they doing. Then there are those married cousins with kids, hardly keep in touch with them, don't even know what to talk to them about.

My wife extended family all speak a Chinese dialect that I can't understand. I am from another dialect and my mandarin sucks.

My office leh ? People just suck up at me because they want me to approve their payment and contracts. so most of my after work conversations by phone and watsapp is just about work.

I have not socialize for so long until I forgot how to socialize. My conversations become so boring. Just the other day, I visited my billionaire friend to take some things from him. I spoke to him about peasant issues, he was like "Duh...boring". He wanted to hear high society talk.

damn...any of you facing middle life crisis like me ?
I mean if you are in your teenage years or early 20s, don't bother posting, because you haven't reach this middle life crisis yet.

Toxic Malaysian Girl - Rachel, Story Updated (Stories)

Her IG , apologize posts ...

The story too long until u need hours to finish reading.

TLDR:
Rachel faked an identity claimed as her brother (Daniel) working in SG. Used the fake identity to date with her bestie Kyannn for 2 yrs using a Voice Changer app.
Meantime she created multiple fake identities like Sister, Mother etc.
Even faking that Daniel is in ICU to make Kyannn cry because she sees her happy.

 Story of Rachel :

I've roughly translated it.. apologies if anything is missing because i'm a semi-banana

Chapter 1 :

Kya is just a cheerful and talkative girl. In December 2018, in an event, she got to know one person called Rachel. They exchanged each other's wechat and IG and immediately got to know each other. While chatting they're surprised to know that they share a same birthday, prompting Kya to feel like it's a destiny or fate, so they slowly got closer to each other.

Rachel and Kya became so close, they're now close friends. In conversations, Rachel reveals a tragic story buried inside her heart. Rachel said that her childhood isn't great at all, that her father is an domestic violence abuser, her mother was insane, but luckily she met a godmother who's also a Dato (Cindy) and also her godfather, which always takes care of her, leading her to have a normal environment growing up. She has been staying at her godparent's house since little. Rachel said that the fortune teller told her that she brings wealth to the family, so many people are rushing to want to take her as their goddaughter. Her godmother is a fairly rich person, have a big house, many sports car, which is why Rachel is able to take many pictures of the fortune in her IG.

Besides Kya, Rachel also have 2 close friends, one called Zhen and another called Yip. Zhen have quite a good family background, Yip isn't bad as well, but all of them isn't as rich as Rachel, because she has a very rich godmother and her godfather have a public listed company. Lots of sports car such as BMW, Audi, Mercedes, properties, insurance and all those luxury brands stuff.

Rachel have a godbrother called Daniel. Daniel also shares the same birthday as Rachel, and he's a very successful young man, He did not rely on parent's wealth to make his stand in the world, which is why everyone calls him Daniel, but not Dato's son, or son of a rich person. So then Rachel introduces Daniel to Kya via Wechat. Daniel have been posting stuffs like luxury cars and brands and motivational quote sort of images in his wechat for the past few years.

Chapter 2 :

And so Daniel and Kya were in a relationship with each other. Daniel lives in Singapore, so Kya never had a chance to meet him at all. This is considered online love? Daniel were so gentle and considerate, always chat with Kya until midnight, sometimes even sing for her. He even told Rachel to take good care of Kya so they will be able to maintain a great relationship. He once even made a ginger tea from singapore and then delivers it to Rachel and then Rachel passes it to to Kya.

Story goes back to Zhen, Yip and Kya. They all knew each other's existence, but were never looking eye to eye with each other, because Rachel told Kya that Zhen's personal lives are very complicated. Rachel said that Kya is a very selfish person. Example paying while eating outside, going KTV, buying clothes, and everything is paid by Rachel. Zhen even takes her clothes and pretend as if it were hers. Rachel did not complain anything because her birth mother is a close friend to Zhen's mother, so she just kept quiet and still provide her with an adequate friendship.

Yip on the other hand, is a third party with Rachel's ex. Rachel found out that her ex is cheating on her when he brought Yip to his house to stay overnight, even wearing Rachel's clothes. Rachel were so sad she complained to her boyfriend's parents but were slapped mercilessly by the boyfriend's parents. Rachel said that Yip have already had abortion twice. Sometimes when Yip is drunk, Yip will ask Rachel to fetch her home. Rachel were a good friend to Yip, even gifted her luxury gifts but were treated this way by her.

Chapter 3 :

The story now revolves around Rachel's godmother.

Daniel introduces Kya to his mother, Cindy. They added each other in Wechat as well. Sometimes, Cindy will send a warm message to Kya, making her feel like the happiest person alive, because she is expecting to have such a warm and lovely family in the future.

Daniel actually has a blood cancer. Day by day the condition of his body seems to get worsen. Every time he has to go to emergency rescue and change of hospitals, making Rachel unable to sleep. Everyday Rachel hears her godbrother's cardiograph sound Rachel will cry uncontrollably because she hears what sound his godbrother is hearing everyday and imagine his feeling (you know, those in hospital reading your heart de.. those dit.... dit.... dit.... sound)

Once, Daniel were in ICU during early mornings. Kya were crying non stop when she heard about it. Cindy asks her to come to the hospitals immediately as she fears that Daniel might not make it. Once Kya knows that Daniel were transferred to a KL hospital, she immediately drives from Penang to KL to meet him. Unfortunately she was not able to even meet him even then.

Daniel kept saying he wanted to meet Kya for many times, but every time there is something that happened so he had to ffk (condition worsens, this and that). Rachel and Cindy both tells Kya that it's really unfortunate but they comfort her nevertheless, making Kya believes Daniel even after a long time.

One year later, Rachel's 21st birthday, also Kya's birthday, Daniel told Kya that he will meet her. Kya of course were happy to be able to meet Daniel after one year of relationship. Who would've guessed, Daniel ffk her again. Kya comforts herself saying that Daniel is not purposely don't want to meet her, but because he's very sick. Daniel gave some gifts to Rachel and ask her to pass it to Kya for her birthday. Kya is only able to cry at night by herself.

Daniel wrote a song to Kya, loosely means that Daniel will keep on fighting the cancer, because there's no one else to protect Kya if he dies.

Chapter 4 (Finale) :

After numerous encounters with death, Daniel prevails. Who would've thought that the first one to pass away would be Daniel's mother, Cindy. In April 2020, she passed away. She passed away so suddenly, she had a will giving 20% of her inheritance to Rachel. As this is unexpected move from her godmother, (she had no blood relation to Cindy) the whole family starts to argue and cause a lot of trouble.

Okay back to the main point of the story : Kya in some unexpected circumstances suddenly got to know that the boyfriend she has (Daniel) and his mother (Cindy) actually don't exist. All these were fictional characters created by Rachel. Rachel has many wechat accounts in her disposal, and she uses those different accounts to communicate with Kya.

All those Daniel's picture in IG, wechat, is all stolen from a real person's account.

Rachel actually had a fairly normal childhood, unlike what she told Kya. All those luxury items, handbags, sports car is actually owned by Zhen. Zhen is actually the one who lend those stuffs to Rachel and Rachel takes it as if it's her own (different from what she said).

Yip, one of her friends, is actually the most loyal friend Rachel had. Once, Rachel wakes Yip up and tell asks Yip if she can fetch her to the hospital to see a friend (Dylan) that just had a car accident. Yip not aware of anything, fetches her to hospital and waited for around 3 hours. So apparently all this were a part of the evil plan that Rachel has. Remember when Daniel were 'transferred to a hospital in KL'? Rachel actually asks Yip to fetch her to hospital, so she can use 'Daniel's' wechat account and sends location to Kya to make her believe that he's actually in a real hospital. Rachel went to hospital just to take pictures and videos to make Kya believe. Who's Dylan you ask? There's no such person. It's another character created by Rachel. When Yip asks how was Dylan when Rachel enters the car, Rachel cryingly told Yip that Dylan has passed away.

The purpose of Rachel saying bad things about Zhen and Yip is so that Kya will not want to be friends or contact them so her plans would not be exposed.

Unfortunately for her, a stroke of luck (or bad luck for Rachel) is when all 3 of them actually contacted each other and found out that all of this is made up by Rachel. Can you imagine talking to yourselves via few different accounts, things such as good luck, thanks, or even instructing yourselves to do something.

Once this was exposed, Rachel posts an apology message to each one of them, Kya, Yip and Zhen.

Moral of the story : Be careful who you befriend.. because they might not even be a real person

Edit : they found this out because Kya found the facebook of the guy who had his picture (Daniel's picture) misused by Rachel. Kya contacted the guy and he denied ever in a relationship or having wechat.

(Stories) ‘I’m proud to call myself a whore’

In her five years as an escort, 24-year-old Ashley Chan (not her real name) has learned several tenets, including how to be absolutely discreet and why you should never fall in love. Welcome to the life of a high-end escort in Singapore.

In Chan’s new memoir, Scarlet Harlot: My Double Life, published by Epigram Books, the undergraduate and sex worker pulls back the veil on the sex industry in the squeaky-clean city state, revealing a sordid underbelly where men pay in the thousands for the hourly companionship of Chan and her peers – and what they do in the hours they’ve bought.

“I’m proud to call myself a whore,” she says coolly in an interview.

During her work, the escort and business studies undergraduate has been paid to kick a man in his genitals, choke a man wearing a hood, and ingest a nightly cocktail of drugs as a professional “party girl”.

There were, of course, the garden-variety sex calls that were more uncomplicated: Chan would show up at a hotel and let her client do “whatever they wanted” to her for two hours.

While Chan declines to disclose exact numbers, she’s cavalier about the things that her work has afforded her: designer goods, a S$12,000 (US$8,900) enhancement surgery on her nose and chin, and all university tuition fees. As an escort that’s part of an agency, Chan also reveals that she has a “quota” – though it’s “very variable”.

“During the pandemic, it’s been quite difficult to work, and my earnings have been reduced by some 60 per cent,” she says. “Thankfully, I have my pool of regulars who are still supporting me through these hard times. I’m still relatively privileged compared to others.”

In her book, Chan goes into prosaic detail about the world of sex work. She speaks of different tiers of sex workers (at the at the bottom of the food chain are “KTV girls” who work in karaoke lounges, with escorts like herself on the top rung), of clients that have flown her around the world, and just how large a role race and nationality plays in determining a sex worker’s financial worth.

“Escorts from Vietnam and Thailand are more beautiful, but they’re not as intellectual in their companionship,” she says candidly. “They’re beautiful in a ‘trophy wife’ or ‘bimbo’ sort of way – but they lack the ability to interact because of the language barrier.”

Singaporean-Chinese escorts like Chan, on the other hand, come “at a slightly higher price point, because we are a little more intellectual”.

Chan sees herself as a “business owner” with herself as the commodity. As such, she is brisk when it comes to listing her business’ costs and overheads: yoga classes to help her keep in shape, the occasional designer bag or lavish beauty product to stay presentable to clients, and frequent health checks to ensure she’s fit to continue working.

And like any legitimate industry, Chan says sex work is not immune to modernisation – or “market forces”. She says social media and the internet have “destroyed” the old way of working, and has driven down prices for escorts and sex workers, among various other ills.

“These days there are actually fewer new escorts, but more sugar babies,” she says. “The whole Ashley Madison thing makes girls think that it’s easy money, but it’s actually not – and the industry has changed for the worse because of that,” she says, citing the online dating service marketed to people who are married or in relationships.

Chan is unafraid of competition from fresh blood, however. She says she stays away from the “politics and cattiness” that younger escorts tend to indulge in. Rather, she wants to make sure that any aspiring escort truly knows what they are getting into.

“You don’t really know why some of these girls are entering the industry,” she says. “Maybe they’re not really there for luxury goods. Maybe they’re there because they really need the money.”

Chan’s story wasn’t so different. Born out of wedlock to parents who later separated, she was left in her grandmother’s care soon after her father abandoned them to start a new family. He refused to finance her education once she finished secondary school at 16. Wanting a better life for herself, Chan answered an innocuous advertisement for a job that paid “S$300 to S$400 a day”.

(Stories) My fiancee comes from a rich family., which is i don't and now is Complications already.

We've been together for about 6 years. Met at a bar and never looked back. We were both 21 at the time and I was due to graduate at the end of that same year. The initial stages were easy. I payed for everything and drove everywhere. I felt like the man in the relationship and liked how things were. However as things progressed she began to want to do things that I couldn't really afford. Trips to Europe amongst other things. She knew it would be tough on me and offered to cover all expenses but I wouldn't have that so I had to dig into my savings to make such trips possible. I only payed for my part but it still drained large portions of my income. Dinners got more extravagant and correspondingly more expensive. I hung in there, somehow.

Late last year I popped the question and we got engaged later that year. Since then things have gotten a little uncomfortable. My side of the family have covered all expenses so far and had planned on funding the wedding as well. I'd put aside a reasonable amount of money but when I approached her with the budget she said that her family wanted to do it. The were insistent apparently. Having looked at what she has planned it is plain to see that I'd never have been able to afford a wedding of this magnitude. It upset me slightly but I decided to treat it as a gift from her parents to her.

It doesn't end there unfortunately. Having put the wedding issue behind us it was now time to start talking about where we'd live. I own a condo, Sterling Condo in Kelana Jaya. It's currently tenanted to my cousin and I was planning on moving there when we sealed the deal. But when I talked to her about this she said that her parents wanted to buy us a house. I was not happy and told her that we was making me feel tiny and insignificant. She fed me some lines about how love is all that should matter and what not but I can't shake the feeling she doesn't believe that I can provide her with the things she needs. If it were the case she wouldn't be running to Papa for everything. Anyway she began showing me the houses or apartments she had shortlisted and all of them were well out of my price range. I said that the houses she shortlisted were nice and left. She sensed I was upset and sent me a text saying that everything will be fine and that she loves me regardless of material goods but it certainly doesn't feel that way. Anyway that is where things stand at the moment.

Am I being silly or do I have cause for concern?

-------------------------------Update 8 and half years later--------------------------

So for some reason I remembered creating this thread here about 8 or so years ago when my wife and I decided to get married. For an even stranger reason, I now feel compelled to give the internet an update on how things have played out. Don't ask me why but it just felt like something I should do. I won't be breaking down each year individually but will instead try to amalgamate as much of the information into one brief update instead.

As expected, her family incurred much of the early costs in our relationship. They paid for the wedding (destination wedding in Da Nang, Vietnam) and bought us a house (bungalow in Bangsar). The early months were easy, I had made peace with the situation and committed to her that I won't let this bother me. Months turned into years (two to be exact) and we welcomed our firstborn. He just made life better, he brought us closer together and we couldn't be happier. But with his birth, the troubles we faced at the start of our marriage started to emerge again. I am Indian and an atheist and she is Chinese from a very Christian family. To be honest, she doesn't believe in god either but plays a role for her family so as to not hurt her mum and dad. Like me she cannot be bothered and thinks it is a waste of time. Being Christian, the grandparents wanted the baby to be baptised and to perform other rituals in keeping with their beliefs. I voiced my concerns to my wife but we agreed that as the baby won't remember anything it is fine and it would all be for show. Reluctantly I took part in the proceedings and made my wife promise me that we won't give in again.

Shortly after the birth of the baby, her father retired and handed the keys of his empire to his son. His son is a brilliant man and also very practical. One one the first things he did, was cut my wives credit card privileges from the company account. He sat down with my wife and explained that if she was not going to contribute to the family business, her credit card would be cut. This was one of my early concerns when we first got married, I knew her reliance on her father could not last forever. Thankfully, this didn't end up being a major issue. Her average spend per month was in the region of RM15k and this excluded one off purchases of luxury items etc. At the time this happened, I was in a stronger position financially and because I essentially got a free house from her father, I was able to save a lot more and liquidate the condo I owned. With this I managed to build a small investment portfolio of low cost properties and stocks. My returns from this was enough to cover this shortfall and I was able to cover her monthly spending. Looking back this was one of the biggest mistakes I made in the marriage. But alas, having compromised so much of my values I thought I might as well compromise another.

More time passed and it looked like I had weathered the storm. My wife was happy and so was I. Our child was growing up to be an amazing young boy and things were just right. But not all good things last forever. As my son turned 3, his grandparents decided it was time for him to start taking classes at church and start embracing Jesus. This is where I drew the line, I told my wife that we agreed that we would raise our child our way and that meant no religion. She agreed and we set up a meeting with her parents and explained our beliefs and what we thought would be the best way to raise our child. There were a lot of tears but they seemed to accept it, or so I thought. Weeks went by and one day I come home to find my wife has a new car. I was shocked, she had a job but it was more one for passion than money. It was with a non-profit and it was part-time. She cannot afford to buy a brand new BMW 6 series. I walk in and ask her what is going on. She says calmly - ''Papa said if we let XX go to church, he will buy us a new car. Also, he said he will pay for school and university so you don't worry about saving so much for his future. It will be taken care of. I know this will upset you but will it be so bad if he is raised Christian? I was and I turned out fine". Words cannot express how deflated and betrayed I felt at this moment. I tried to explain to her that my dismay was not at the fact that he was going to be raised Christian but that she was willing to compromise on our shared values for money. I was also upset that he was going to be indoctrinated and made to believe in fairy tales but would maybe have been able to look past that if it was done differently.

Anyway, many arguments later we decided to call time on our relationship. 5 years we were married and one son we made. In the months leading up to the divorce I got a job in Sydney and told her I'll be taking it and that she can have the house and any other shared marital assets. I keep my investment portfolio and get to see my son whenever I am in Malaysia.

It has been three years now and I just got my Australian PR. My son is 6 and because of COVID I have not seen him for a year. I usually go back twice a year and she visits with him twice a year so I get four visits with him every twelve months under normal circumstances. Am counting down the days until I get to see his little face again. In terms of my wife (well ex-wife now) and I, we are on good terms. She is still the love of my life and I envy the man who gets to spend the rest of his life with her but I made my decision and have to live with it. I have a girlfriend here and it is going well, I might even propose but don't want to until I fully get over my ex-wife. As for my ex-wife, she remains single and is embracing life as a single mum. I don't talk to her about her love life and she doesn't ask about mine. Sometimes when we are on a call in the middle of the night and a little drunk we may probe a little to see if there is anything going on in each others life but as far as I am aware she remains single.

So the purpose of the update, I want to know what strangers think of the situation and whether what I did was right or wrong. My friends all say the same thing and that is that I did the right thing but that is because they are my friends and so have my back. Her friends say I did the wrong thing because they have her back. Hence my curiosity as to what an independent observer makes of this?

Thanks and sorry for the long post. Trust me when I say this is the condensed version.

(Stories) Expenses for wedding is should be Happy right? but seem like is not...

I am a Chinese guy who is planning to marry my gf. I recently proposed to my girlfriend and we are planning for the wedding now. As we progress further, I realized that there are more unexpected costs that we need to fork out (more specifically, the guy will has to fork up for majority of it). As the figure get bigger and bigger, I feel more uneasy and not comfortable.

In my understanding, marriage was suppose to be something wonderful, where both parties work together toward a better future. However when I was being told the "cultures of marriage", it literally stunned me and renewed my understanding. Just to quote a few sentences from my gf:

1. "Guy should have no say on the planning etc (e.g. pre-wedding photographer), by right the guy should just pay for whatever requests the girl make."
Marriage is between two persons, I don't understand why she said that... is it supposed to be an event where only she's happy but not you?
Besides, after marriage, you both you will living together and sharing the expenses; it only makes sense to me that she tries to save your money, discuss everything together, what kind of event, how many tables, wedding planner package and whatnot... All that has a price and it's easier also if both help to find a good deal. For example, my brother's wife has a good friend who's a photographer -- he volunteered as the photographer for their big day, got his camera lens run over by a car, and still did not charge a cent. Salute.

2. "I will not accept too low a wedding offer. The market standard is RM10k, and I will not accept anything lower. I am not that cheap"

3. When I asked for wedding offer indication, the reply I receive was "girl side normally doesn't indicate the budget, the figure solely depends on the sincerity of the guy family. Some people rm10k, some rm20k."
Based on (2), I guess you can only cry to her that 10k is all you can fork out or you'll have to postpone the marriage (or worse...), since you still need to cover for so many other things. Marriage shouldn't be something that depresses you, it should be happy...

4. "Don't tell me that you only plan to marry me with a diamond ring?" She wants to have another necklace or bracelet too.
Oookay well I think it's possible to find cheap ones that still look good, but... I doubt she'd accept. Tough luck :|

5. "I will want to have two wedding dinners, one in your home town and one in mine. When my family and friends visit your hometown for the wedding dinner, the hotel and other expenses will be paid by the guy side"
I don't know the full cost, but I know both my siblings opted for a single wedding dinner and invited friends and relatives from other states. My brother also arranged homestay for close relatives/friends for an overnight stay so we could also go out enjoy some food before the big day. Everyone happily and willingly came to witness the happy union of two individuals in love.
Also, both their weddings were contributed by both sides, and angpows also given to the respective sides. If you're lucky, the angpows can cover the cost for the wedding dinner, but if you have to bear 100% cost AND the angpows on female side goes back to female, then I'm sorry, your pocket's gonna bleed real bad.
[/I]

6. "When your family comes to visit my family to discuss about the details, you can submit a list to my mum, mentioning all the items that your side will gift to my family. For example, roast pig, big biscuits etc. If my mother deem anything missing, she will highlight to you".
Is this for 过大礼? the gifting session or something like that? Best if you fully comply to your future MIL lah, I think this is not too much of a big deal, but different families have different "level of tradition" - depending on how uptight they are with the traditions, they may want you to provide very specific things that will be tedious to find. Some families are okay with a simple big angpow to cover for whatever missing. For example, in this day and age, purposely buying a baby's potty bowl? tamtung?  sweat.gif might be waste of space and money... then can opt for angpow of equivalent value, and so on....

It is futile for me to discuss about this issue with my gf. I tried to voice out my opinion that "time is bad, I prefer if we can spend less on the wedding". I am sure many guys can relate, it didn't end well. "You told me that you have saving, that's why I said yes to you!", this answer broken my heart. Yes, I have saving, but it doesn't mean I shall deplete all my saving immediately. There are more things coming after the wedding, we need to spend on house, children, their education, standby for job loss etc.

Honestly, no more fantasy left for me to fantasize about wedding anymore. I see it as something hideous, trying to kill young people and new family. This might be a norm which everyone finds it normal but I find it hard to swallow.

Any suggestion or insight for me? I find it wrong for me to think so badly of marriage, we have yet to walk to first step!

Am I being too cheap?

Erm.. well i cant comment so much as im still single but im sure there will be some solutions that can be help ? or maybe the timing now is not really good due still got covid19 + now is cmco in malaysia. I think the best is the correct timing so that everything will be smooth and nice.
