Google Drive Files Gone Missing Due To a Bug In The Desktop App

Google Drive is one of the best cloud storage options available and is open to the public. However, according to a trending support thread on Google’s support forums, users have reported that some of their files have started to disappear from the service in recent months. Furthermore, since none of these files were deleted manually, they don’t appear in the platform’s recycling bin feature and thus cannot be recovered (so far).

Early on in the investigation, many speculated that the files vanished due to a hacker attack, but this isn’t the case. According to a thorough investigation, it has been concluded that the issue stems from the Google Drive app for desktop, which affects users regardless of whether their system is Windows or Mac. With that said, users on the browser variation of the service can rest easy.

It was also discovered that the bug would eliminate the data from the account, almost reverting the account back to a state before that data was made. Unfortunately, there’s no explanation for it so far, but Google has confirmed that this problem is related to a syncing issue seen in the recently rolled-out v84.0.0.0 through 84.0.4.0 of Drive.

Although this issue affects – as Google puts it – a “limited subset of Drive for desktop users,” it is recommended to backup all important files and documentation. Furthermore, the company has warned users to avoid disconnecting their Google account from the Drive on desktop, and that they should not tamper with the “DriveFS” folder that’s locally found on their machines in any way, shape, or form.

Messages Bug On iOS 15 Deletes Saved Photos

A new report revealed that iPhone users may encounter a serious bug in iOS 15 that deletes their saved images from Messages. In general, the bug would wipe off those images when the user deletes the Messages thread it originates from and then performs an iCloud backup.

Usually, this would not happen as the saved images in the Photos library are independent of the thread. We tested it ourselves and can confirm that while the photos will still remain after deleting the messages, they will disappear once an iCloud backup is done.

Users should be wary of this issue as many iPhone owners out there have enabled their iCloud backups to happen automatically. If you regularly clean up your messages, you should hold off for a while until this glitch is fixed. It is also interesting to note that Macrumors has tested the bug on iOS 15.1 beta 2 and says that the problem has yet to be resolved.

Mobile analytics firm Mixpanel says that iOS 15 has been adopted by almost 20% of iPhone users in less than 2 weeks. So far, several bugs have been discovered in the operating system such as touchscreen issues on the iPhone 13 and overheating issues when using Spotify. We can only hope the upcoming stable release of iOS 15.1 will address most of these problems.

CDPR Created Cyberpunk 2077 Bug Montage Before Game’s Release

CD Projekt Red has been churning out fixes for Cyberpunk 2077, which launched in quite the state. Unsurprisingly, a game that launched with that many bugs will have enough for a montage video or two. And a few of those have made their way online.

VGC reports that the leaked videos were part of the files stolen from CDPR during the major hack it suffered earlier in the year. The videos show various bugs of Cyberpunk 2077, edited for comedic effect.

On its own, a bug montage is not necessarily a bad thing. CDPR probably intended to also include it with Cyberpunk 2077 as a sort of bonus material, the way it did for The Witcher 3. But considering the state it launched in, it’s probably understandable why the developer decided against it.

One of the producers of Cyberpunk 2077 also confirmed that the bug montage is legitimate on Twitter. The tweet has since been deleted, also for obvious reasons. To say that it would have been taken poorly would be an understatement. But to be fair, it was a reply to another tweet by Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, which was also deleted.

If you want to see the video montage for yourself, you can do so by heading to VGC’s report, linked below. But be warned that the second video opens with extremely NSFW bugs.

Google Resumes Updates For Several iOS Apps, Fixes “Out-Of-Date” Bug

December 2020 was the last time Google released any updates for its iOS apps, and its actions are causing issues for users that are on the mobile platform. Users who tried to sign in to their Google accounts were reportedly met with “this app is out of date” notices, specifically with Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Photos. To name a few.

The good news is that Google seems to have apparently resolved the issue, rolling out the appropriate updates as a solution. As to the cause of the sign-in error, Google says that it was due to a bug.

The rollout can also be seen as Google staying true to its word, that it would start including Apple’s new mandatory app privacy labels with every app update. That said, there are still other Google-based iOS apps that have yet to receive an update. Case in point, the search engine’s Chrome app still remains unpatched and could spell disaster, from a security standpoint, if it continues to be left as such.

Apple macOS Big Sur Users Report Fast User Switching Screensaver Bug

Apple macOS users have reported an annoying Big Sur bug that would occur regularly on their devices. According to the complaints, the system’s Fast User Switching screensaver feature would pop up without warning, disrupting whatever the user is doing.

While this issue has recently made headlines online, its existence have been recorded as early as late 2020 on Apple support forums and Reddit. In addition, even though its believed that the screensaver bug mainly occurs on M1-based devices, users have reported encountering the issue on Intel-based Mac machines as well. Notably, the bug is reported to affect devices running on the 11.1 version of the macOS with multiple user accounts present.

The Fast User Switching feature allows users to quickly switch between different accounts saved on their devices without having to log out. When activated, a screensaver will appear while the switching process is running in the background. The bug causes the screensaver to appear randomly even without the user activating the feature, and cannot be removed by regular means.

As pointed out by several users, the screensaver can be removed by closing and reopening the lid on their MacBook devices, a light press on the Power/Touch ID key, or using the Alt-Command-Q key shortcut to get back to the login screen. Keep in mind that these are merely short term solutions for a problem that would still happen randomly.

A more long term solution that was suggested is to disable the Fast User Switching feature altogether. However, this would also mean that users will have to stick with one general account when using a shared Mac device.

Currently, Apple has yet to fully address this issue, but a fix may be finally making its way to users soon. As pointed out by users from MacRumors forum, the bug is no longer appearing in the 11.2 beta version of Big Sur, indicating that the issue may have been resolved. No word on when the new 11.2 update is planned to be rolled out publicly at this time.
