Oppo Debuts The Find N2 Foldable Phone

Oppo officially debuted the Find N2, its 2nd generation foldable smartphone for the market segment. A direct successor to the original Find N, the new phone comes with several upgrades and features.

Firstly, the Find N2 is slightly more narrow than its predecessor, with an overall thickness of 72.6mm when closed, which is 0.4mm thinner than the Find N. Oppo has also managed to reduce the weight to just 233g, which is just slightly above the weight of a pre-cooked steak. When opened, the entire phone’s thickness is 7.4mm.

Moving on, the Find N2 continues the compact foldable phone design with a new 17.7:9 aspect ratio, 5.54-inch cover display. While it sounds like a downsize from the 18:9 aspect ratio of the Find N, it does have thinner bezels and even supports a 120Hz refresh rate this round. Additionally, it also has a peak brightness of 1350 nits and is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus.

Unfolded, the main display of the Find N2 still measures in at 7.1-inches and even retains the same 9.6:9 aspect ratio. The screen is an LTPO panel, meaning that your refresh rate will range anywhere from 1Hz to 120Hz. Like the cover display, it is also very bright but has a higher peak brightness at 1550 nits.

More importantly, the Find N2’s Flexion hinge has also been vastly improved. Firstly, it now only uses 100 parts, down from the 138 parts that the original Find N initially had. As an indirect effect, the reduction of moving parts also reduces the overall weight of the phone. Further, the new hinge design also reduces the crease of the foldable display by 67%, thus making it less visible. Also, unlike its predecessor, it can now be folded into different angles.

Specs-wise, the Find N2 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 SoC, supports Oppo’s 67W VOOC fast-charging technology, and has a 4520mAh battery internally. Camera-wise, main module houses a triple-camera array, comprising a 50MP main Sony IMX 890 sensor; a 48MP IMX581 ultrawide, and a 32MP IMX709 telephoto. All these sensors, by the way, are powered by the brand’s new MariSilicon X processor, co-developed by Hasselblad and designed with features like AI Noise Reduction, 4K Ultra HDR Video recording, and FlexForm Capture, to name a few.

The only thing missing from the list right now is local pricing and availability of the Find N2. We’ve reached out to Oppo’s local rep for the details, but even they are saying that they won’t be able to provide us the information until a later date.

OPPO Find N2 Flip: Here Comes The Brand’s First Clamshell Phone

OPPO recently continues its foldable adventure by unveiling the Find N2 which is the follow-up to the brand’s first-ever foldable phone that was released last year. Interestingly, the company decided to add another foldable this year in the form of Find N2 Flip.

The new model is indeed the company’s first attempt at a foldable clamshell form factor. While the Find N2 Flip’s general shape may not look that different from the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4, you can easily tell it apart by the phone’s massive 3.62-inch AMOLED cover display that has a native resolution of 720 x 382 and protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

Inside the phone, OPPO has provided the new model with a 6.8-inch AMOLED Full HD+ screen with variable refresh rate capability that can go as high as 120Hz. Also equipped with the display is a 32MP f/2.4 auto-focus selfie camera.

As for the phone’s Hasselblad-branded main camera, it features a Sony IMX890 50MP f/1.8 autofocus camera which is accompanied by a Sony IMX355 8MP ultra-wide f/2.2 camera. Being a foldable clamshell phone with a poseable hinge, users can utilize the Find N2 Flip’s main camera and its huge cover display to capture selfies too.

Unlike the Find N2 which is a Qualcomm Snapdragon-based device, its Flip counterpart is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ processor instead alongside LPDDR5 RAM and UFS3.1-based storage. The clamshell phone does not support a memory card though but it still carries the MariSilicon X image processing chip which was developed in-house by OPPO and has been previously used in Find X5 Pro as well as Reno8 Pro.

Completing the device’s general specifications, OPPO has opted to implement a split battery design into the Find N2 Flip which together delivered a total battery capacity of 4300mAh. 44W SuperVOOC fast charge tech is also a standard on the device but both its charging speed and battery life were not revealed by OPPO.

While the status of the oversea release for Find N2 is still murky at the moment, OPPO has generally confirmed that the Find N2 Flip will be making its way outside of China next year. That being said, the clamshell model was not shown at the OPPO Malaysia INNO Day Experience Event earlier this week which made us wonder whether it will actually be released in Malaysia or otherwise.

Then again, OPPO Malaysia was also not even able to confirm if Find N2 will make its way to this market even though it was the main star of the event. So, we have to wait until next year to see whether these new OPPO foldable devices will be made available in Malaysia.

Still, if you need an indication of its price tag, the Find N2 Flip with 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage can be obtained in China for CNY5,999 (~RM3,806). The device is also available with 12GB/256GB and 16GB/512GB setups which are priced at CNY6,399 (~RM4,061) and CNY6,999 (~RM4,441), respectively.

Huawei And OPPO Enter Patent Licencing Deal

Huawei Technologies has signed a patent licensing deal with fellow Chinese tech giant OPPO, the former announced via a press release. This will see both companies share patents of several key technologies with one another, though the exact figure of the agreement is still undisclosed at this time.

According to Huawei, the patents involved include those concerning 5G and Wi-Fi, as well as audio and video technologies. The mutual recognition of intellectual property value between companies is a major step towards fostering a positive cycle of innovation and research in high-value standards: investing, receiving returns from investment, and then reinvesting,” said Huawei Intellectual Property Department head Alan Fan in the press release. “This will enable our industry to keep innovating and provide consumers with more competitive products and services.”

Meanwhile, OPPO Chief Intellectual Property Officer Adler Feng regarded this newly inked agreement as “a win-win deal” for both companies. “We are very pleased to enter into a patent cross-licensing agreement with Huawei,” he said. “It clearly demonstrates that the two companies recognise and greatly respect the value of each other’s intellectual property.”

In a statement to Nikkei Asia, OPPO revealed that the licence deal will give it access to Huawei’s most advanced 5G-related technologies. At the same time, the company will also provide some of its own patents to its fellow Chinese tech giant, likely in terms of audio and video technologies – two fields which OPPO has a long history in.

Thanks to the sanctions imposed by the US government, Huawei was forced to abandon its development of 5G integrated chipsets and other products, and is also banned from acquiring US-based technologies, especially from the country’s top chipmaking suppliers. However, the company still controls a rich 5G patent portfolio, which it has decided to source out to other companies, including rivals such as OPPO and Samsung.

Speaking of which, Nikkei Asia reports that Huawei has signed a licence agreement with Samsung around the same time as well. However, details regarding the deal are still not known, though it could involve the former’s patents on 5G technology.

OPPO Officially Unveils Find X3 Pro Photographer Edition

Not long after a live photo of the device was leaked online, OPPO earlier today has officially confirmed the existence of the Find X3 Pro Photographer Edition on Weibo. The limited edition smartphone is slated to launch in China on 16 September 2021.

Other than showcasing the phone’s vintage camera-inspired rear panel design through multiple images, the company did not provide much details regarding its specifications – sans its IP68 waterproof rating. However, it is speculated that the Photographer Edition will only differ in terms of visual appearance but retains the same specs as the original Find X3 Pro that was launched locally in April 2021.

OPPO also revealed that the limited edition smartphone will be packaged together with several different accessories that are decked out in the same colour theme. These include a storage case, lanyard, a near-identical phone cover, a USB-A to USB-C cable, wall plug, SIM ejector pin, and what appears to be wired earphones.

Interestingly enough, the Find X3 Pro Photographer Edition’s unveiling did not make any mention of the rumoured OPPO x Kodak collaboration. It is possible that rumours of the partnership may be inaccurate, or the company is actually saving the reveal as a surprise during the phone’s launch. On that note, other information such as its date of release and pricing is also expected to be announced this Thursday.

Nokia Sues OPPO For Patent Infringement

Nokia has recently filed numerous patent infringement complaints against OPPO in multiple countries throughout Europe and Asia. The true nature of these complaints are not exactly clear but they apparently revolved around the agreement that both companies signed back in 2018.

As it turns out, the agreement has since expired, according to Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents. Based on the official statement from Nokia, the company has already attempted to negotiate for renewal but it broke down after OPPO rejected its offer which naturally has triggered the Finnish company to pursue litigation.

He also noted that the dispute between Nokia and OPPO involved both standard-essential patents (SEP) and non-SEPs which cover a vast list of technologies including connectivity, user interface, security features and more. Florian also pointed out that Nokia has filed 24 complaints in Germany alone.

While OPPO has apparently opposed the move by Nokia and accused it of using litigation as a “tool”, this is not going to be an easy fight for the Chinese company. After all, Nokia is very experienced when it comes to patent disputes and have won many cases over the years against even bigger giants such as Apple, Daimler, and Lenovo.

Alleged OPPO Smart Tag Leaks; Could Feature UWB, USB-C Charging Support

It appears that tracking tags have been gaining momentum once more, with both Apple’s AirTag and Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag leading the charge. Not wanting to feel left out, it seems that even OPPO wants in on the “tagging” action and is reportedly preparing to launch its own Smart Tag soon.

Images of OPPO’s alleged Smart Tag were first posted on the Chinese Social network, Weibo and spotted by Digital Chat Station. Based on the first picture, the smartphone brand seems to have gone with a standard, disk-shaped design, with its branding plastered simply on the top.

The second image reveals that the tracker will support USB-C charging, as well as ultrawide band (UWB) technology. In comparison to the Galaxy SmartTag’s Bluetooth tracking, UWB would effectively allow OPPO’s smart tag to be more accurate. Sadly, there isn’t a lot of detail about the tracker, nor when its parent company plans on releasing the device.

On that note, we’ll be keeping an eye out for updates, so be sure to check this space from time to time.

OPPO Reportedly Developing A Portless Smartphone With Hidden Front And Rear Cameras

Smartphone brands have been experimenting with the idea of developing a phone with a portless and unified body for several years now. The first being Vivo with their APEX 2019 concept phone and then Xiaomi earlier this year with its unnamed quad-curved waterfall display prototype. Now, it appears that OPPO may be joining their ranks as well with their own portless phone.

According to Chinese leakster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the alleged device will feature pressure-sensitive buttons on its side, an under-display front camera, and also a hidden rear camera setup. In regards to the latter, it will sport the same electrochromic technology that is featured on the OnePlus Concept One smartphone.

Being a portless smartphone, most would assume that it would only feature wireless charging, but that isn’t the case, surprisingly. Digital Chat Station says that the handset will still feature a USB interface that is “hidden by a special structural design” – implying some sort of special mechanism used to hide and reveal the phone’s charging port if the user wishes to charge it via conventional wired means.

The expected date of unveiling and details of its hardware specifications are unknown at this time. Additionally, it’s not specified whether this alleged device is an actual production model, or a fully functional prototype ala the OPPO X 2021 rollable smartphone. Although there is a chance that it may be the latter, as the brand has yet to showcase any of the aforementioned tech, especially an update or evolution of its 2019 under-display tech.

OPPO Confirms Find X3 Series Will Launch On 11 March

OPPO has officially announced that it will be launching the new Find X3 flagship series on 11 March – as previously suggested by leakster Jon Prosser last month. While the company only mentioned the Pro variant through its press release, it is rumoured that two other models will also be unveiled during the launch – namely the Find X3 Lite and Neo.

So far, OPPO has confirmed that the Find X3 Pro will feature the Snapdragon 888 chipset and its new Full-Path Color Management System for its display. In regards to the latter, the company says that the system is capable of supporting full DCI-P3 wide gamut and 10-bit colour depth, enabling for “authentic and accurate colour reproduction”.

On the unofficial side of things, earlier leaks suggest that the upcoming flagship phone may feature a 6.7-inch curved display with 1440p resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. Apart from the Snapdragon 888 SoC, it is said that the handset will come with a dual-cell 4,500mAh battery with 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging support.

Photography-wise, the Find X3 Pro may feature a quad-camera setup housed within a square-shaped “hump” which somewhat blends seamlessly with its rear panel. It is suggested that the setup will comprise of two 50MP Sony-made sensors for its primary and ultra-wide cameras,  a 13MP telephoto with 2x optical zoom capability, and a 3MP macro camera with 25x microscopic zoom.

As for the other Find X3 variants; it is said that the Neo is actually a rebranded OPPO Reno5 Pro Plus, while the Lite is a rebranded Reno5 5G. To recap, the Reno5 Pro Plus comes with a 6.55-inch curved AMOLED display with 90Hz refresh rate, Snapdragon 865 chipset, 12GB RAM, 256GB storage, and a 4,500mAh battery with 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging support. Meanwhile, the Reno5 5G features a smaller 6.43-inch display with 90Hz refresh rate, Snapdragon 765G SoC, up to 12GB RAM and up to 256GB storage, as well as a 4,300mAh battery with the same fast charging support as the Pro Plus.

Keep in mind that the Find X3 Pro’s alleged design and specifications, as well as details regarding the Neo and Lite models are merely rumours at this time. Whether the leaks are authentic can only be determined once OPPO launches the new flagship series next week on the aforementioned date at 7:30pm local time via its official YouTube channel.

OPPO Find X3 Models To Launch On 11 March According To Leaker

Earlier in the month, serial leaker Evan Blass shared images of three devices in the new OPPO Find X3 line. Now, another leaker has shared what he believes to be the launch dates of the phones.

Jon Prosser claims on Twitter that the upcoming OPPO Find X3 devices will be announced on 11 March. They will then be available for pre-order on 31 March, and will finally be available on 14 April. The announcement date lines up with the previous rumours of a March announcement.

On another note, following his initial leak, Evan Blass has since pointed out that the X3 Neo is indeed a rebranded Reno5 Pro Plus. And with the X3 Lite being a rebranding of the base Reno5 5G, this leaves the Pro model as the only actually new model. As a reminder, the earlier leak of the OPPO Find X3 Pro points to it having a 6.7-inch 1440p 120Hz display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, and a 4500mAh battery that supports 65W fast charging.

While we now have a date to look forward to, it remains to be seen if they are indeed accurate. Time will tell if that’s the case. And from there we find out if the specs of the OPPO Find X3 Pro are accurate. As are the status of the other two as rebranded versions of existing devices.

OPPO Reportedly Launching Three Find X3 Models Next Month; Promo Images Leak

OPPO is reportedly planning to launch its new Find X3 flagship series in March. News of this was brought forward by leakster Evan Blass (aka OnLeaks), who also provided leaked promotional images of the new phone.

The recent photos corroborated with the leaked renders which he had showcased previously, seemingly confirming the new rear camera design featured on the new handset. Blass added that the upcoming series will consist of three models: the Find X3 Pro, Neo, and Lite – the latter is believed to be a rebranded OPPO Reno5 5G, according to several sources.

An earlier leak from Blass suggests that the Pro variant will feature a 6.7-inch curved display with 1440p resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, as well as dual-cell 4,500mAh battery with 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging support. Chipset-wise, OPPO had confirmed that Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 888 flagship will be powering the new device.

Unfortunately, not much is known regarding the other models, especially the interestingly named OPPO Find X3 Neo. Hopefully we’ll find out more details about the upcoming flagship series soon enough, provided that its rumoured March launch window is accurate.
